Rear bumper plate or hybrids

the great him

So I'm looking at picking up a rear bumper to replace my current stock number due to some recent damage, insurance will possibly be cashing me out in which case I will go with a rear bumper. I want something that will complement my front ARB so just tube is out. I also will be going with a swing out tire carrier and jerry can holder as well. I have been looking at CBI but am torn between the plate or the hybrid. For those of you who have one of these please post up what you like and dislike about your current bumper(or past bumper). And please post up picks of the two styles and of any other bumper similar to the CBIs... Thanks.

I haven't seen it in person, but I like the CBI plate when it has the rear tire carrier. I think that fits the rear of the 4Runner the best.

I like they Hybrid, the price is right and from the sides it looks plate anyway.

I haven't got that far into my build writeup where I cover the install of my CBI but here are some pics of it. I went with the hybrid with tire/gas carrier.

Here is one when I went wheeling and you can see the location for the Hi-lift mount.

I really like that one, what flare option did you tell them you had? How much extra was the hi-lift mount... Any thing you wish you would have done differently or ordered in addition

If I was buying one, I'd go hybrid.

I don't remember a flare option but I have the SR5 (no flare). The hi-lift mount comes standard. It's basically some beefed up wing nuts and bolts that you can attach to the back of the bumper in the provided holes. You can see them in a few of the above pics.

The only thing I would have done differently is see if there was a way to have a CB antenna mount on the opposite side (passenger side) instead of using the default one on the driver side. Reason being is I had to run the antenna cable all the way along the inside of the tire carrier swing out. Not that big of a deal but believe it or not the 18' of coax was too short to reach there and I ended up having to get an extension piece.

I have an ARB on the front and am going with the CBI plate for my rear hopefully when I get taxes back. I like the clean look of the plate rear and I think it covers a bit more of the underside of the truck. Also it seems the hybrid hangs down a bit further than the plate along the back, anyone know if this is true?

the hang down on the rear lower tube of the hybrid is one thing that i was wondering about too...
CBI OffRoad Fab can you chime in here and give some imput... id like to know the weight difference as well, from the full plate to the hybrid -both with swing out and tire carrier and dual fuel can holder?

and anyone else with pics of either post them up. i have seen one CBI up close and personally on a fellow members rig who lives close by, and i like it very well -its a plate style with swing-out so i know the quality of the work will be great not mater what one i go with...

The welds of a CBI are beautiful for the up close beauty.... I've yet to see a hybrid in person, but that's what appeals to my eye more. Maybe have the option for the swing out in the future, but unless you plan on mounting a 35" spare on the back, I would skip it. The rear swing out quickly gets annoying.

For average wheeling, the tire mount is fine, but for the extreme stuff, it needs to be mounted even higher.

well im running 35s now -305 70 17 -34" and most 35s are actually only 34.25-34.5" tires... anyhow yeah im not into extreme rock crawling with this rig or extreme offroading, more gearing it towards overlanding... but yeah im leaning more and more towards the hybrid bumper

The tire mount is adjustable in height.

I know there are a shit ton of pictures of my rear hybrid in my build thread. Anything you want to see specifically?

Some specs on the T4R3 rear bumpers:

T4R3 Hybrid Rear Bumper Weight - 100 lbs
T4R3 Plate Rear Bumper Weight - 130 lbs

The factory spare will mount up with the plate bumper but not the hybrid (it will but not very well). The hybrid has the best departure angle of the two. The tubing visually makes this deceiving but for overall off-road clearance it is the best option. The plate isn't too far behind however for clearance.

For most customers it comes down to the look they want. I personally run the hybrid on my 3rd gen and I like it for the weight savings. The other thing I like is that there are back up light mounts between the tubing that accept many different styles of lights. I went with the Rigid SRQ's.

I have designed my own rear bumper in my head but not yet built it. Here are a few thoughts I had of changes that I would make compared to the tire carrier bumpers currently on the market:

Swing out length= mine will not cover the entire width of the rear bumper, but something closer to 2/3 so that you don't need 6" of empty space behind you to open the back door. It will only carry a tire and a high-lift, no cans.

Swing out side - mine will be hinged from the driver's side rather than the passenger side so you can access the cargo area with less trouble in a parallel parked scenario. (open swing out, open cargo door, unload your wife's groceries, set them down on the ground and close swing-out so you can step onto the curb) ---> (open swing out, open cargo door, step directly onto the curb). I know it's not a major concern, but I figure you gotta put the hinge on one side or the other, might as well be the convenient side.

What you say makes sense, some of the time. I used a 2/3 style, but you still have to open it to get to the rear gate, so I eventually figured it may as well carry as much as possible, because it's a pain no matter what. As for opening toward the street, well you will have to be sure it doesn't go much beyond 45 degrees or someone might run in to it. Mine goes way beyond 45, and I like it that way. I also prefer to open it from the driver's side, because I'm the driver. lol. Mine also has a spring loaded pin which holds it open, but I can pull it up and open it wider if I need access to the curb.

:couch2:

!

I can only really see the back tube when i'm directly behind and lower than the truck. Because the sides and top are plate... the tube is barely noticeable to me. But that's me and to each their own.

And I forgot to mention the backup light mounts that Nathan did. I don't regret my choice at all. I can also say for sure it's a very solid bumper, I banged that thing on every rock along the Rubicon and it held up great.

do they make that with a left hand swing out? or with the spare mounted on the left side?

I would prefer to have the tire directly behind the driver, an area you cant really see anyway, instead of blocking that right corner.

I'm pretty sure it's customizable. Why don't you reach out to CBI and ask? They are great to work with.
