Planning to put full length 500lb Ryadon drawer slides in mine ... mix and match a locking and non-locking set so that both drawers lock when closed and lock when fully extended.

What do you guys do with the sleeping part over the back seats while you are driving? It looks like some have the panel on a piano hinge that just folds back onto the main platform but I may be seeing it wrong since I don't see any pictures with the front panel folded back. Others look like it is just a removable panel, but what do you do with that panel while driving?
The reason I'm asking is because I have a kid (about to be two kids) that obviously need the back seat while driving. I would like to make a cargo box/sleeping platform that is easy to setup and stores well when not in use.

I haven't built them yet, but I plan on building two cubes that will bolt together to the front of my current box. When I need my back seats, I'll pull these boxes out and fold up my seats.
I'll most likely pull the bottom part of the seats out instead of folding them up, to give me an extra 6 inches if sleeping space when I need it.

I used a piano hinge and fold it back over the main platform. You lose a little of that portion to trimming in order to clear the pillars and headliner, but not a significant amount (in my opinion).

That would be kind of cool. Have it on top of the main box on ball barrings or rollers, but lock in place. Pull it out and have legs drop out to support it as table. Or slide towards front of truck for sleeping platform. Mmmmn. Ideas....

Here was my design I might be building soon. Basically like you mentioned, can be used as a table or completely slid out and used as a sleeping platform. Takes up some drawer depth though.

I like the interlocking part for the sleeping platform. I was envisioning using pins but that is a much better and simpler way of doing things. I wish I knew how to use CAD like that!
Y'all are thinking too hard on the drawer sliders.
I sanded them down real smooth and hit them with a bar of soap. This is an old-school (and very cheap) approach. It's easy to do if you own a table saw, have a steady hand, and don't have a fear of cutting your hand off.
How tall do you think your box is ?

If I remember correctly, it is between 8" and 8.5" tall externally. and just under 7" inside the drawers. I think its 38"x39" which leaves just enough room for the tensioners behind the back seat.

In my old delica I had something as you described. The panel/table piece was on 36" drawer slides with 200lb capacity each. Slide it out half way for a table (the center seats rotate 270*, so I could rotate them and face the back of the van) or slide all the way out for sleeping. The slide out portion was the top piece of the main platform when closed away. When slid out, the main platform used 1x4" slats spaced 4" apart. I used foam as the bed and the foam would be supported easily by the slats. The table/slideout had 2 slats on the underside to keep the slideout centered and level.
This worked great in the delica because it's a highroof so there is a lot of space. I could sit in the seats and eat dinner comfortably, then slide it out and sleep comfortably too.
It's light enough I could easily remove it by myself. The top piece came off the main compartment for removal from the van.
Not exactly transferable to the tight space of a 4runner, but it may give you an idea!

That is a pretty awesome design. Looks like it was a perfect setup for the van. I like how simple and easy the sleeping arrangement looks. I am kind of a minimalist and like things to be as simple as possible while getting the job done properly. Thanks for the input!

How is yours so deep? [phrasing lol]
When I measured mine at 8" high I could only go 34.5" without being right into the lift gate.
