Rear Cargo Light Intermittent

On my 1997 SR5 my cargo light works if it is switched on, but when it is switched to "door" it rarely works.

Three questions.

1. What triggers the cargo light on the cargo door? I can't find any type of button like there are on the side doors. I'm thinking that perhaps it's in the latch itself?

2. Is the cargo light meant to come on when the side doors open. If so, it doesn't.

3. How can I fix this?

Thanks!

The switch in the gate latch is corroded and needs to be cleaned up or you have a break in one of the wire going from the body to the latch. I believe it will be the problem with the switch.

Thanks. So the switch is in the gate latch?

I have a similar prob in my 01. If I leave it on 'door' while i'm driving around the light intermittenly comes on/off.

Anyone have a pic of where exactly the switch is or a pic of it removed?

ive had the same problem... and ive traced it down to the actual light, the contacts int the light are bad, cause when i switch to the "on" position it still flickers sometimes... im pretty sure its the light assm.

Same problem here. The switch is in the latch mechanism in the hatch door. Not easy to get to. I just need to start taking things apart and clean it up.

same problem only I think mine is a sensor because when I open the lift gate there isn't a light on the dash to indicate that the lift gate is open. Is there a detailed thread anywhere on how to fix this? I searched and couldn't find anything.

hmmm. do you guys slam the crap out of your doors?

I just bought this T4R a week ago so I don't know. The truck is in amazing condition. It is 14 years old. Things go.

Also, searching this forum there are several other threads on the same thing with no solutions. I think this is a common problem.

fair enough . . . i guess im just thinking about that because im an OCD door closer. i close my doors as gently as possible. and when a passenger (whether its the girl or someone who rarely rides in the vehicle) slams any of my doors i shout: "It's Japanese, you dont have to slam it." my girlfriend thinks im a maniac, but its whatever. im trying to preserve the parts i can avoid being damaged prematurely. plenty of other stuff that actually matters that i plan on fixing, doors def not on that list.

lol nice! Count me in as a victim of this crazy rear door light flicker problem. the light seemed to be delayed and in a sleep mode or something when i had a normal bulb in and now that i have an LED in there it flickers. prob just the bulb for me??

cordrayj1 im with you there when people slam my doors. except i dont know Japanese you gotta teach me that haha but yeah i hate it!

I took the latch off of the gate. The thing is riveted shut. If there is a button in there I can't get to it.

Any other ideas?

I'm going to bump this because I can't find an answer anywhere, and it seems that a lot of us have the same issue.

C'mon none of you hardcore 4Runner guys know the answer to this simple tech question?

Sounds to me like you may have to just replace the latch assembly.

It is definitely the latch. When I tap the latch with a wrench the light goes on. I removed it and sprayed it with WD40 and it seems to have fixed the problem. for now anyway.
