so my rear diff is makin all kinds of clinkin noises and whinin pretty bad. im wondering what i should do. i have a 2000 sr5 5speed, and pretty sure i have the 4.10 gears. should i get a different gear ratio if i have to replace? also was gonna go ahead and throw an aussie locker in there too.

Are you 2WD or 4WD. If you are 2, then I think you can just switch the diff for another ratio (correct me if I'm wrong there), but if you are 4wd, then you would have to replace the front diff as well.

Have you drained and replaced your gear oil? Do you have metal on your drain plug magnet?

im 4wd. and the gear oil aint that old. and i know its full., i checked the level a week ago and its got plenty in it. not sure if the drain plug is magnetic. maybe i will drain/refill and check to see if i have metal shavings on the plug.

Yeah, shavings or chunks in the oil is a sure fire way to tell you have a problem. If you don't, you might want to open the diff up and inspect it just to be sure. Diffs are expensive.

well if the diff is toast, depending on your future plans for the rig i say go with some 4.56's or 4.88's depending on the tire size you plan on running, and depending on what's gone wrong in side there can be a few other things that need to be replaced along with the ring and pinion also it may not be a bad time to start looking at some lockers if that's your game, sucks that this is happening like what was said above check for shavings and be sure that this is where the noise is coming from and not some other bearing or other part that turns at about the same speed as the diff.

ya, at this point, i just THINK that its the diff. the 5speed already wines a good bit normally, so im havin a little trouble determining if its really the diff. got my dad to drive the car yesterday while i hung out the rear and held on to the trailer hitch so i could listen down below. it def sounds like the diff, im just not sure if its bearings or what. at first i though it was a freakin exhaust issue. i did notice yest when i was under the truck that i have a broken weld for one of the hanger brackets. im just not sure, so im takin it to my toyota mechanic who has 25+ years experience monday morn. hopefully he will give me some good news. i gotta take it for my 180k timing belt etc. anyways, so i figured why not add to the 1000$ im bout to spend.

also, for any of you guys w 5speeds . . . when u had a new clutch put in, did your throw out bearing start squeakin every time you let your foot off the clutch pedal?

its at the shop. mechanic called yest and said shavings on plug are normal and that i have done nothing to cause the damage. he seems to think its the pinion bearings. dont know how much those cost, but i guess its gotta be done. also, hes gonna throw some new axle seals on there just because he's gonna have everything out. also gettin timing belt, water pump (he says its looking like the beginnings of the pink milkshake [i have about 182k miles on it]), pulley bearings, etc. i just really wanna know what the hell is goin on with the diff.

Uh, so maybe just a sanity check here, but I thought manual transmissions didn't run tranny fluid through the radiator. Don't they just have gear oil in there rather than a dedicated tranny fluid?

Let us know on the cost of the pinion bearings. I have never heard of them going bad, but I suppose they can.

I have heard that small shavings or metal dust in the diff are ok, but any larger shavings or chunks is bad. I guess this is kind of obvious, if you are losing material it is bad.

The pinion is the large microphone looking gear that spins on the ring. The bearings you could get for I would guess around $40 but he well have to reset the ring and pinion back to spec with a new crush collar. That requires some mechanical know how = more money.

mechanic was talkin bout the collant starting to mix with the water from the water pump or something.. . nothing to do with tranny fluid. trans is fine. THANK GOD. put a new clutch in last year and thought i was drivin a new truck. should hear from him this morning. ill keep yall posted.

well, he's the best toyota guy in charleston, been doin it for a longggg time. not cheapest work i ever had done, but I TRUST him. which is worth the extra dollar to me since I drive so much (85k miles since 2007). Also, i asked him to take pics for me, so i should have some documentation during the process.

That's supposed to happen........

As far as what Nelson is referring to is the pink milkshake where your radiator has a tranny cooler on the bottom and connected to your radiator where your water/coolant is located. If a hole is developed between the two you have whats called the pink milkshake and that will destroy your transmission. Another thing Nelson is talking about is the fact that you have a manual transmision which I was thinking also didn't recirculate transmission fluid back to the radiator/tranny cooler like the autos do

OOOOO.....im stupid....i guess we are talking bout 2 different things here. ya, i dont have a tranny cooler cause its a 5 speed. so i guess the pink milkshake doesnt apply. bottom line, mechanic said the water pump NEEDED to be replaced.

Yeah, that is pretty common. I think the typical is every other timing belt change. Lots of people get coolant leaks around the pump.

If the mechanic actually said "its looking like the beginnings of the pink milkshake", I would not trust him. It's impossible for that to happen on a 5 speed like Nelson mentioned because you don't have a tranny cooler. Pink milkshake happens when automatic transmission fluid mixes with your coolant. Ask him why he thinks your manual would take ATF. Either he's an idiot or he's trying to rob you.

um. he didnt say that. i did (i was confused about what the hell a pink milkshake even was). and hes a badass mechanic. it was a misunderstanding between he and I. hes not trying to rob me. he's prob the most qualifield person around my area for toyota
