Rear Diff crush washer orientation

Going to change my rear diff fluid tomorrow and was wondering, does anyone know the proper orientation of the crush washer? Flat side to diff OR flat side to plug bolt?

Flat side towards the bolt. The other side goes to the side that might not be flat to help it conform. Sometimes I forget to check and never had one leak. I changed my front and rear differential fluids last week and reused the washers. No leaks and I don’t expect any.

I remember going through this when I changed mine. I am pretty sure the flat edge does face outward (towards the bolt), but I am agree it probably does not matter is you torque it to the right specs.

Thanks for all the replies! Flat side towards bolt is the correct orientation (assuming it was done right to start). That was how the existing were installed.
Fresh severe gear in!

Just don’t do this.
