Rear diff explosion

2004 4runner, v-8 4x4 limited.
100,000 miles. 2.5" lift and 265's on stock wheels.

Was wheeling on clay and climbing about a 45 degree angle, myself and 2 passengers. I was not pushing too hard on this particular occassion - I have pused much harder with this truck before.

So I am ascending the bottom of the hill, nice and steady 1500-2000 rpm's to let the A-TRAC work....KABLAM!!:wtf:

Stopped and backed off the hill with a couple clunks in between. towed to mechanics house.

Broke 5 teeth off the ring gear. Not that big a deal until I found out you cannot get stock ratio gear sets from anyone other than Toyota. $1200.00 for a new gear set from Toyota.. F THEM! Went to junk yard and bought a whole carrier assembly for $650(still not cheap). This is my first mechanical failure from off-road abuse in my 15 year toyota history.

$1000 lesson learned...Need to have a warranty OR an old beater and DD.

Just info.....I have not heard of this being a problem with the 4runners.

$1200 is ridiculous! Especially if it can just blow up like that. Toyota has significantly jacked up the price of their parts across the board though. $650 for a salvaged third is a normal price in my area

With your lift and the circumstances, i don't think that warranty would have bailed you out either....

Hmm, i wonder if Toyota knew about this because they upgraded the rear diff on the 2010 4runners.

We stock the gears seperately.
