rear diff fill plug removal

I ordered an extra fill plug today just in case..

I tried it again with the 12 point but it just slips...

going back to osh or sears for an 6 point later tonight hopefully.. along with some pb blaster..

for the hammering part.. do I take an rubber mallet to it or an metal hammer?

I'm just pissed that is the 4th time the axle seals are leaking.. eerrr

Definitely metal. You want the shock/vibration to break the adhesion between the threads. It doesn't have to be THAT hard--you don't want to crack the case. A regular 16oz. hammer is better than your BFH for this. Higher speed, less mass. I like Atlanta__Man's suggestion of hammering AROUND, as well. Can't hurt.

The seals are leaking for the fourth time? Doesn't that mean you've already had the plug out at least 3 times?

I agree with 6 pt socket and breaker bar. Brace yourself against the tire or axle with your feet and giver all you got!

yeah.. the first time les schawb fixed it.. (many many years ago)

second time it leaked, took it to the stealership.. and within an month.. it leaked again.. dealer fixed it with the one year warranty.. and that was about 8 years ago.. coming to 9 next month..

the 3 times was at an shop and not by me..

I finally got the socket for it.. will give it an try this weekend..

I talked to the parts manager at the local stealership and I told him that is an common issue in these rigs.. he told me, he is going to look into it at work... maybe there be an new design for the o-rings ?

Have you replaced/modded/cleared the breather? It seems like unless the seals are being replaced incorrectly that there is likely pressure building from a clogged/damaged breather.

I will take an look into that.. it sucks I can't fill it with fluid since I couldn't open the bloody plug.. hopefully this weekend I can have some wrenching time for it.. I just been super busy with school, work and the lady..

Mix a 50/50 solution of ATF and acetone. Best penetrant you can ever use, and it ends up being cheaper per oz than the others like PB Blaster WD-40 etc...

Any should do. Mix 50/50 in a regular spray bottle and viola, best penetrant ever. It also doesn't hurt to hit the plug a few times like people mentioned to help loose things up.

any other methods? I sprayed some of the mixed blaster on it and is going to let it set over night...

so freaking frustrating..

bright side.. smog passed with flying color but damn computer won't read my obd 2 port.. but it will on an hand held one..

check the fuse? or ? any people had this problem during smog?

If you can't get it out and find yourself in San Jose anytime soon give me a holler and I'll pop the plug out for you. I might be up in Sacramento on Saturday but that is still very up in the air, and I wouldn't have most of my tools with me.

Not sure on the smog deal, I would start with checking what protocol the smog shop is trying to use to connect and what your scanner is using. https://www.scantool.net/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=3 that site shows the wiring difference between the different protocols, might lead you in the right direction.

I just tried this on some frozen lug nuts - soaked one side in ATF/acetone twice a day for four days straight and they still wouldn't budge. The other side came free after two treatments of PB Blast.

Oh hell no. Trust me! :cry2:

PLENTY of people have stripped the front diff plugs which are Allen, and those get less salt spray.

That's what I'm sayin.

Huh. I've stripped several hex-head plugs, but never an allen-head plug. Interesting info, guys.

I used PB and still had to use vice grips to get it off. It stripped it, but I got a new one from the dealer and the metal is harder in the new one. Dealer said they always replace the factory ones because of the soft metal.
