Rear diff gear whine - dealer story

Looks like the rear diff's o nthese 4runners are starting to be an issue. Had mine replaced at 56k, they did the rear diff, wheel bearings and axel bearings.

LOL....it's not an issue. Just because one or two people on this forum are having an issue (and it might not even be an issue in the first place) doesn't mean that there's a trend. For every guy that does have a rear diff issue, there are probably 10,000 guys that don't have any such issue.

I'd say there is a trend. In the last 4 years at toyota ive replaced at least 50 rear diffs on 4th gen runners (in a town of 70000). And we always replaced the whole assembly, never rebuilt. Any dealer worth your business would put a set of chassis ears on the rear axle on both hubs and the diff. The noise is diagnosed in less than a half hour. The original dealer probably didnt even have the right tools due to their "bottom line". My manager would have smacked me upside the head if i sent it back without a diagnosis.

The real bottom line is that the dealership truly depends on the people it employs. If the manager is that much of an idiot just imagine the techs he hires and the quality of work he expects from them. Id stay away from that dealer altogether.

I have to say as a Toyota Technician I am surprised by the load of BS the first Dealership gave you. Yes Toyota has gotten rather picky about having the warranty items marked where they failed and so on, but I doubt that it really would have hurt the service manager. The reality is that he probably didn't want to do the job because warranty doesn't pay as well as customer pay and that's his "bottom line." I wouldn't be surprised if after 60k he would have tried to make you pay for it rather than get Toyota to fix it.

I recommend you also report this to the BBB, Toyota, and BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair)

Need help rear differential noise

Guys i need help and suggestions.. I have almost same issue i have 2007 4runner with 52K miles i got the truck at 44k miles nearly 7 months ago...i started to notice some noise from back and when i read this post i feel like its exactly same rear differential issue...When i accelerate it starts at 20m/hr and i can hear it till 35m/hour and then its still there but cant hear it due to road noise..i can also hear it again when decelerating from 60m/hr to 50m/hr..its most obvious going up hill and goes away when i am not pushing the pedal...today i took it to the dealer in NJ..tech test drove with me and 1st he was reluctant to admit hat there is any noise he says you have no record that you perform differential service which is due at every 30k( the vehicle record does not show if it was performed) any ways while driving on highway at different speeds he admitted that there is noise but its pretty normal for the 4runer i said its still under warranty and if there is noise then its gonna go worse..he said that they need a proof that there is something wrong with the differential otherwise toyota wont refund them...then he said he needs to drain the fluid to check if there are metal pieces in the oil i agreed later he said the fluid was dirty and needs replacement... so they did not agree to fix the issue and were really not agreeing to move forward and in the end service manager said its normal for 4runners to have little humm......after oil change the noise is still there ..should i go back after some time and fight or it is useless the power train warranty expired in aug 2012 and there are 8K miles left...any suggestions would be welcomed.

I just bought my T4R (2006 V6 SR5 w/82k miles) and am noticing that I have a very similar noise. I would call it a slight "howl" from the rear end, which I only hear from about 20 mph to 35 mph when accelerating. Otherwise, I don't hear it. I know the diff was serviced at 60k miles. I drove several 4runners before buying, but I can't remember if I heard this in others.

Is this really normal and common? Or should I worry?

It might be worth your while to........

I called the 800 number to the corporate headquarters customer experience center. The gentlemen was very nice and listened to my dealer experience. I made it very clear I wasn't calling to complain about that experience but wanted to focus on getting my rear diff repaired as it should be under warranty. After about 30 minutes on the phone, he asked me if I minded taking it to another dealer to which I agreed. He said if I had a similar experience and it wasn't repaired, he would turn my case over to a case manager. I was assigned a case number and got this person's name that I talked to. I asked him if they had any "recalls" or "service programs" concerning these rear diffs and he said none showed up. He said he understood my frustration with the dealer comments I had to listen to (posted up top) and said to call him back as soon as I had another dealer look into it. I'll make an appt. as soon as I can with another dealer and see what happens. This is very disappointing but I'm going to remain positive and scratch the 1st dealer visit up to a crummy dealer. Maybe the next dealer will get the ball rolling with warranty to fix my rear diff and this will all go away.

kick this up a notch if you don't receive satisfaction from that 2nd dealer, to wit: do you have a friend who's a criminal attorney? If so, you might consider having him send the dealership a so-called $20 letter (!) stating that any and all drive train problems are completely covered under US Vehicle Warranty laws, and that any further foot-dragging by the dealership(s) will trigger litigation. Be sure he sends a CC to the service manager! If that doesn't kick things loose, well then you know you're really and truly dealing with a bunch of cynical crooks and you never really had a fighting chance anyway.

You realize this thread is 3 years old right? And the 2nd dealer stepped up.

Ooops!

I had no idea this thread was three years old. Glad to hear the 2nd dealer stepped up and did the right thing. By the way, how does one determine the age of a thread, or of a single post? Enquiring (befuddled) minds want to know........

Many thanx in advance.

When I bought my '06 back in 2012 it had a noticeable whine. over the last year and a half it got a lot worse. I took it to the dealer to have it checked out. They drained the fluid and said that it didnt look good, but until they got warranty approval they wouldnt take the rest of it apart to see if it needed to be replaced.

Apparently our trucks have a sealed differential. Its basically all one piece that bolts to the front of the differential instead of going in from the rear like most other vehicles.

rebuilt mine

FWIW: My 06' 4x4 with over 100k had a loud whine. Two places said they usually just put in a whole new axle/diff/assembly. Then I asked a guy who only does differentials day to day for decades. He recommended a rebuild. I went with him. Cost 1k and I expect it won't ever need another repair.
