Rear Diff Lock

Has anyone ever used the rear differential lock for legitimate purposes(besides doing major off-roading, in which I would assume it would be used exclusively)? I have bought a Tacoma and 4runner and never got the Rear Diff Locker option because I could never justify having it under everyday driving conditions. I live in Colorado and regular 4wd is enough even in extremely snowy/icy conditions.

Just got my 4Runner also, congrats on your purchases. From what I see, if your OK with just using 4WD then there probably is no use of having the rear diff. locker, my car came with it, but I will probably never use it UNLESS I get stuck, I guess thats the only time most people will use it.

Some people talk about using it to pull boats up really steep slick ramps. I'm sure there are other non off roading uses that I am not thinking of. I agree with you in that if you don't go off road much and it's not hardcore when you do then you really don't need the locker. I have a 2000 Runner w/ the 2.7 which wasn't even offered w/ a locker and I have never wished I had one. To me it's like a sunroof, if it was there I would have bought anyway, but it in no way swayed my decision, just options I personally won't use so why pay for them.

yeah,it's pretty much for off roading or if you get seriously stuck ona shoulder of a road maybe but I'd rather have the locker and not use it than need it and not have it.

ive only had to use mine twice now. and i probably could have gotten out if i just put a little more effort into normal 4 wheel drive. but im glad i had it one time where we thought my brother was going to roll his tacoma downa dune and we had to get him towed out. he was pitched pretty hard. we just locked both our diffs and he cam out pretty easy.
