rear diff parts list and locations

Im about to pick up a diff lock axle, but what else do I need from the donor car? Where is the ECU for the locker located? I have a 98 so to my understanding the harness is already there. I just need the rear axle, button and the ecu right?

or you can just make up your own harness etc and do what is called the gray wire mod. that is what I did when I put a locker into my 2000. If not familiar, it allows you to use locker in other than 4wd low.

Why would I need to make a harness if mine supposedly already has it from the factor? not just for the grey wire mod.

Aside form the ECU/button stuff, if it's in good shape, grab the harness bracket attached to the driver side around the top of the rear shock. The stock elocker harness doesn't connect directly to the locker motor; it snakes down toward the axle and has another plug attached to that bracket. There's a short harness between that bracket and locker motor itself, which you will absolutely need. You could probably get by without the bracket but it makes organizing stuff down there a lot easier.

You can get the bracket/rear harness new from Toyota still, but they're not cheap, as is tradition. You might as well try and snag the button-to-bracket harness off the donor vehicle if you can, in case you don't actually have the harness, or yours is trashed for some reason.

Make sure you have the right gear ratio in the front diff too. My understanding is that the standard models had a 4:10 ratio, but the models with elockers were 4:30, so you would need to regear the front diff or swap the diff from the donor as well.

Oh, and the axle housing is different from non-elocker to elocker, so you need to do some welding and grinding to clearance the locker motor too.
