Rear diff questions mine has 2 breathers normal?

Recently purchased a 1999 4runner 5spd 3.4 went to change the the diff fluids and noticed on the rear diff there is a barb fitting screwed into the top of the diff. My 96 doesn't have this took some pics.

Lol I Dont what it does previous owner said he didn't know what it was and put a silicone hose on it. I do know a little diff fluid come out after a long drive.

that looks like it originally had an abs sensor, and someone plugged the hole with that barbed fitting somehow...

could be an ARB, but they use the push in fittings like paintball guns use.

Could've been changed out though.

Only real way to tell is to pull the diff out.

There's no elocker button or switch on the interior of car. What does this valve do if it where an arb?

The ARB is an air actuated locker.

The barb would be for the air line to lock the ARB.

I doubt that is an ARB connection.
most likely ABS.

also, you should be able to pull the fill plug, and look in with a flashlight to verify what carrier it has. whether it be an ARB, a spool, stock etc.

Ummm,

Wouldn't ABS be in the housing itself, not in the Diff?

I've never seen an ABS connector on the actual Diff......

i have no idea. but that looks very much like its supposed to accept an abs sensor. looks to be a bolt hole there to hold it in.

ive seen LOTS of abs sensors on top of the diff in that exact same spot.
actually MOST are there, very few right at the wheels.
I know that Toyota uses them at the wheels as well...

Jack up the rear, open up the other diff breather on the housing, hookup an air compressor to the pictured "breather", spin a wheel. to see if both spin the same direction. If they do, cracked open a celebratory bottle and rejoice, if the don't, crack open a cold one to prep for diff removal and inspection.

Or live life behind closed doors, only to regret your decision never to find out what's behind that diff case while lying on your death bed...or more importantly not disclosing your findings on this thread for all of us to see.

Maybe the axles has been changed out for an older unit? Or at least the 3rd member?

The older 4runners, ie:93-94 had the abs sensor in the center differential.

I'm thinking this is the more likely scenario. Perhaps an attempt to swap in factory 4.88s...

I'm thinking the same, air compressor line connected to a barb fitting probably wouldn't be able to hold enough psi. Abs sensor does seem like what it could be. But Dont think a abs sensor uses a barb fitting to make a connection. Will try to look inside through the fill hole and original breather.

ABS sensors are at the ends of the axles near the wheels for the 99, with wiring heading towards the mid section.
I like the thoughts on it being an older axle (not familiar with them though) as that doesn't look like the difs on either of my 3rd gens.
