Rear Differential assembly replacement

I was wondering if anyone has replaced a rear diff assembly before in here i notice alot ppl have questions about Fluid changes , but anyway i have a 1991 V6 4 Runner Yota , not really sure what size the rear diff is but it makes alot of noise , when the gas pedal is released, yes the fluid level is good, i have another 4 runner in the back yard for parts , not sure what size the rear diff on it is i plan to swap it out right into my 1991 , I have purchased a service manual for it but i notice the rear diff replacement section is not that detailed it basically says to disconnect driveshaft and both rear axles , then the diff housing bolts , does it simpily just come out after that any one with info please post thanks

Before you go swapping 3rd members, make sure they've got the same gear ratio, or be prepared to swap the front differential too.

After that, it's pretty much that easy - disconnect the brakes, pull the axles, remove the driveshaft, unbolt the third, and pull it out.

you pull the drive shaft off and on the pinion is color mark that tells you what you gear ratio it is.
keep in mind the v6 is different from the 4cyl differential.

Be sure to drain the diff first !

But before jumping to the diff, are you sure the noise is from the diff and not a u-joint?

And if you diffs are original, the ratio can be determined from the axle code on the VIN plate on the drivers door jamb.

im pretty sure the spare 4 runner i have is a V6 ill sure check thanks alot guys

Getting the 3rd out isn't that hard. One thing I do though is put a plastic sandwich bag with a rubber band around my brake lines, that way you don't have to bleed your brakes as much afterwards.
