rear differential fluid leak?

Thanks. Placed an order with local dealer parts dept so when i go to the mechanic who worked on it in April, i'll have less downtime waiting for parts.

For pinion seal leak, would the gear lube come out of the wider side of the carrier, like at the RTV silicone seal, or the narrower end of the carrier joining the drive shaft (u-joint?), or it could be either?

Thanks.

At the seal, nearer to the u-joint.

new pinion seal installed

Today, I finally took the ride to the mechanic who did some bearing work on it in April. I brought with me the pinion seal i ordered from Toyota. The mechanic said the leak seemed to be caused by debris trapped on the seal that overtime sandpapered it. He put the genuine Toyota seal in and asked me to come back in 200 miles. I did ask what he would perform on these returns he allegedly requested from everyone and he said in my case he'd be toping off the gear lube etc. At any rate, he didn't charge me for replacing the pinion seal.

I'll post a follow-up if the seal replacement didn't stop the leak.

Thanks for all your help. :driving:
