Rear Differential Problem

I have a 2000 4Runner SR5 Sport (hood scoop opened), 5-speed manual transmission with TRD supercharger, TRD supercharger belt tensioner, TRD cat-back exhaust, TRD air filter (air box opened), and TRD brake pads. I have Toyo Proxes S/T tires (+ 1 size) on 16" five spoke OEM rims.

I have over 325 hp and over 350 ft

Wut Garrett1478 said ... I'm interested in knowing the symptoms or the event wherein the rear diff went bad. I have an ugly noise on de-celeration. Seems to be getting worse by degrees. Wondering if this is a sign, a bad omen that a rebuild is in my future.

The ring and pinion gears in your differential have to operate with the contact pattern between the gears just so. If you're getting whining on deceleration, it indicates something in the diff has gone bad (carrier bearing is a likely suspect) and the contact pattern is no longer correct.

If you haven't already, check the diff lube level and replenish it if necessary. Most likely, though, if it's making noise a repair is in the offing. I'd get it done ASAP, as it takes very little running with a noisy diff before the ring and pinion gear set becomes damaged and cannot be readjusted to run silently.

Thanks for the info. I feared it was something serious. Good advice to get it in soon ... I guess it won't magically repair itself the longer I drive it!

hi I have a 2000 supercharged with 33x12.5 18 toyo M/T and I have striped my ring and pinion 3 times about every 3000 miles and I am done with this this last set of gears I sent to Washington to Boby Longfils and had them heat treated but they still broke I am thinking about having a dana 60 made for my truck but that will mean the ARB lockers and the chrome allow axles I bought will be useless to me so if you found a different solution pleas tell me.
