Rear differential, what is broken?

This is on a 4runner I am looking at for a side project. I can take the driveshaft and shake it. Something is clearly broken at the rear differential. Any ideas? The circled area is where all the play is.

Truck just grinds when you try to move it. Seller said it came to a stop when this happened...like the brakes were put on. No driving since.

Thanks, sounds like a 3rd member replacement.

Plus one on the pinion bearing. Most likely a pin hole in the back dif cover ran low or out of great grease and took the pinion bearing as will as some teeth possibly.

I will take some photos of the axle housing and 3rd member I just replaced. That's really not that rusty.

Open up the fill plug and see if there is any gear oil in there. You would be lucky if there isn't any broken teeth and it is just the bearing.

Thanks, sounds like a 3rd member replacement.

That's your best option and what I did on my 01. The damage is severe and not worth fixing as it's cheaper to replace the 3rd member.

It might be cheaper to get a complete rear axle with the same ratio from a junkyard and swap .
