Rear Disk Brake Conversion Pt 1

Rockdawg, did you ever get your ebrake squared away? I'm getting ready to do this myself, and was curious if you ran into any snags or if you had crossed that bridge yet at all.

I'm sorry I haven't tackled it yet. my son is now 3 months old and is sleeping through the night and life is starting to get back to normal. And this is on the top of my list to get done.

I figured out how the sequoia with 4 wheel disk brakes has a firm pedal.

Hey Rockdawg, any update on how the brakes have held up? Specifically I am curious if you have gotten any deformation due to the shimming shown below?

Now you have to shim the caliper bracket so the Caliper is centered on the rotor.

Shimming like that adds a moment load on top of the normal shear loading, so I am curious if you have seen any indication that this might be a bad way to do it?

Couple other questions too: Did you install any kind of proportioning valve, or do the mustang brakes balance well as is?

Did you ever upgrade to the 1 1/8 MC? Did that fix your pedal issues?

They have held up great. I have not had any deformation that I can tell. Everything is still working like it did the day I finished it. No proportioning valve, the mustang calipers seem to balance really well with the Tundra front brakes. I still may do the MC upgrade but I have gotten used to the pedal feel and it will still lock up all 4 wheels. I think I have almost figured out the ebrake too so stay tuned.
 
Just wondering why you didn't swap out the full rear axle for a electronic locking rear with disk brakes from a 1997-1999 Toyota FJ. I know the cost might have been a little higher but it should just bolt in and you get a factory e-locker and all your brakes in a tight factory setup.

The main reason is that the fj axle is wider and it is not a bolt in process. All of the link brackets would have to be relocated. Also I have an ARB rear locker that I am fond of:nod:

Shhhh I have a part 2 that I still have to put up. LOL your exactly right. What it has come down to is determining the length and the ends with a little rub protection. Im pretty sure some frankenstine mustang/4runner cables should do the trick. Just have to get around to doing it.

Can you post the part numbers of the calipers and rotors you used?
 
little update. my brake cables came in the mail today. I am out of town but when I get back Part 2 will be completed quickly. Stay tuned.

Sorry I don't have part numbers but walk into any pick and pull or AutoZone or O'rileys and ask for 94 Montero Sport Rotors, and Rear Caliper from 94-04 Mustang Gt and you will be good to go.
 
So $35 to rock auto and I have 98 mustang rear parking brake cables. and tonight I ordered some cooper cable stops. I had to wait until the cables were here to measure the cable. The plan is to cut the cable and put new stops on to work with the stock system. Pics to follow :D
 
Looking online I cant find which motor the montero sport had the 3.0 or 3.5 there is an ls option witht the 3.0 and an sr option witht the 3.5. And dumb question im sire but ypur using the rear brake rotors from the montero correct?

not a dumb question at all yes they are rear rotors. As for the motor size I don't know that it matters but I would go 3.5 since it would be the upgraded option.

I had intended to work on my parking brake today but a 15 month old kept me busy with other things. LOL It is coming I promise.
 
Just so you all know make sure that you build a templet out of wood or some other material because I had to elongate a bolt hole. Now was that because my drilling skills suck or because I cant transfer measurements I don't know but the measurements above are from my template.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe this works with the transfer case on the 3.4's. I looked into this a while back in short no one makes an off the shelf solve for the 3rd gens with a v6. I have plans for a bracket using a slave cylinder but haven't had time or energy to cut the parts out of metal to fab it up.:peep:


I think this may help with the parking break. It looks like it connects directly to the transfer case.
