Rear end howl at all speeds

I never have added or changed out the differential in front or rear, but after a tire rotation and brake job, I got the howl sound that was 2 months ago.



I have eliminated the diff. fluid as the problem.

I believe it to be my bearings, specifically the pinion, now I will seek confirmation and try and find the complete axle like you.



I need to put this thing to bed, without going to the stealership.

Verify your universal is good at the 3rd member as well. They will howl like a bearing when the needle bearings are going in them..

About to try and tackle my rear this weekend. Have a howl and vibe that I have a feeling is at my 3rd member as well. Reacts just the same as a bad U joint would, but my driveshaft is brand new. Only vehicle of mine so I'm probably gonna have to replace the whole diff with one from ECGS since I can't leave it jacked for a week or two. Shit sucks.
Good time to get a $600 check - when you're hit with a $700 bill :lol:

Edit: was a u-joint :doh: last one has a mm or two of play when wiggled just right

Final update...my bearings were done, magnetic plug had shavings all over it, fluid was dark, bad.

I'd have to say this is on me for not flushing the differential fluid at 70k, I put it off and forgot about it. It cost me $1k I'm not as technically & mechanically inclined as the other members in here and feel like this was a job best left to the pros.

You guys were correct about the ring, pinion and the races, all of those were replaced: $350 in parts and $600 in labor, but man is my 4runner quiet, and like the theatre PSA Silence is golden!

I wanna hear how badly I overpaid

Didn't really overpay, I think, as far as parts go. Labor is entirely subjective, and a ***** no matter what, but it sounds pretty good to me. The rear axle bearings alone are a pretty involved job. It'd be $1000 well spent in my book, if you don't like wrenching.
