Good morning all, so my wife was backed into in a parking lot and the back bumper on our 2018 PRO got pretty hammered. The body shop that is attempting to fix it is having a hell of a time masking the area between the black step area and the actual paited bumper. They are having such a hard time that they have now ordered 3 bumpers and keep screwing it up. Basically what is happening is when they remove their tape it peels the paint and looks like hell.

Has anyone on here had to have a bumper replaced due to an accident, and if so did you have this kind of issue getting it painted?

Shouldn't they just remove that plastic trim piece, paint and then re-install? I think this sounds more like a body shop issue.

Exactly, they should paint the bumper and then put it on the vehicle. It's a simple job really. That's a terrible body shop. If possible, take it somewhere else. Seriously!

You need a new body shop!!! The black plastic trim comes off and then they paint the bumper and reassemble. Are they trying to paint the bumper on the truck? Depending on your color you may also need to blend in the paint into the surrounding body panels. Higher metallic paints will require blending.

On another note what's up with wives and '18 Pros. My wife had a fender bender in her '18 TRD Pro yesterday. Looks like she will need a new bumper and grill. Bumper looks salvageable though so I may keep it and do the high clearance mod and see how I like it on mine. Would just have to get it resprayed in my color.

Raw plastic bumpers

Factory plastic bumpers from Toyota do not come primed. The area that stays black should be taped 1/8 inch back from the final tape line. Then use 1/4 inch fine line tape to create a straight sharp line. Scuff bumper with fine scotch brite pad. The important step is to apply plastic adhesion promoter. Then seal basecoat and clear. Before bake cycle remove fine line tape.

I don't believe the black step piece comes off. I am pretty sure (not 100%) that it comes with the bumper and is not removable. The lower black trim piece does come off, but they are not having an issue there. This picture was their first attempt and I immediatly rejected this.

Looking at the picture the are definitely not using fine line tape and they should not tape on the textured area you will never get a sharp line. Tape in the groove where it is smooth. Look at the original bumper you will see that's where the factory tapes there line. As an automotive painter I must agree this shop doesn't know what there doing.

I have to agree, this is getting absurd. The last two attempts were a bit better, but still noticable and not back to factory standards. I will give them one more look Monday and if not I will have them put it back together and find another shop.

This happened on my 4th gen too. Body shop didn't do the job properly. And they were the best recommended place I could find. Yay! Oh, and my wife backed into an illegally parked boat trailer. Not her fault, and we hadn't installed the back-up camera yet. Life's funny.

This is an OEM bumper, I asked to see the invoice the first time the attempted to paint it. The issue is not that they are using knock off parts, the issue is the replacement bumpers come raw and their painters are incompetent.

Find a new body shop and don't pay this one a penny. They have no clue what they're doing. If paint peals off due to masking tape, what do you think will happen over the next year? Plastics require a special prep and prime, if that's not done correctly, it will never stick correctly.

It's on the other guys insurance so nothing out of pocket on our end. His insurance is aware of the issues and authorized me to take it to another body shop Monday.

So I moved it to another body shop who were able to identify several more issues caused by Service King. It was the lowest quality body work I have ever seen. Luckily it will be fixed correctly and will be ready for trails and new pin stripes.

On my 2011 I hit 3 deer and a turkey and each time had the front bumber replaced! Great shop, never had an issue. With the wild animals, that’s a different story!

I am not a fan of aftermarket bumpers, especially up front, but in the rear I would consider a simple, no swingout aftermarket bumper if I do get rear ended. If nothing else, it can take better the scraping over rocks.
