Rear Hatch "handle"

Anyone know of a rear hatch "handle" that can be installed on the lower sill of a '05 Sport so you can close the hatch without grabbing the paint?

Yes, it's called a tag/licence plate

If you don't like the cloth strap, you could try to install an assist handle on the inside panel so you can pull down on that. Once gravity is in play and the liftgate is down, the assist motor takes over and pulls it closed.

From the 3M paint protection film used for clear bras, etc. I made a flattened semicircular paint protection patch to attach to the lower edge of the door. This is what I grab to bring the door down and close it. It's almost invisible, won't scratch like paint will, and is removable.

Just get a piece of angle iron slightly longer than the distance between the lower license plate screws. Drill some holes for the screws, mount it behind your plate... instant handle.

Just go to Home Depot. Get a cabinet handle & some sheet metal screws. Drill a couple holes in the tailgate & viola! Eventually the holes will probably strip out, but just fill the holes with Liquid Nails & mount the handle somewhere else. There's enough space on the tailgate to move the handle around dozens of times!

Seriously, if you don't want to drill holes in the tailgate, just get a rope & tie to the rear wiper. Not one of those knarley lookin hemp ropes - get a good nylon one so it will look pretty.

You guys just love makin stuff complicated lol....I just pull the stock strap and then give the licence plate a shove....no harm done to any paint, no installation required ;)

Give the guy a break, he's only posted here three times and had an honest question about something that we have all wondered about.

That said, I use the emblem for my place to press the door down.

If I was to add a handle of some sort on the outside, I would put on a boat cleat to use both to close the door and to tie a rope to to hold the gate down when I am carrying lumber that sticks out of the back end. Afterward I could hang my anti-sulphur gas mask there for when I next drive with the gate open.

it's only been 1 day since he posted. some people are more busy in their lives, so they can't check the forum everyday. lets cut him some slack and give him time to respond. :)

Let's keep it on topic.

I think the 3M idea is a pretty good one. I qam not sure what the clearance is on the inside if you wanted to mount up handle on the inside of the hatch towards the bottom. Also I am not sure howstable it would be. If there would be not clearance problems and it would be stable enough I guess you could get one of the handles like the one on the pillar on the passenger side window and modify it to work there. I would look at mine for you but I am on vacation and my T4R is at home.

I do appreciate all the suggestions and will probably look at trying a couple of them. I also didn't me to start an uproar and name calling. Is this the way the board normally works confused ?

Sorry, have to apologize for the members. We've had a recent influx of trolls and some members may be weary of a new face. Hopefully the McCarthyism won't go as far as scaring new members away.
