Rear hatch struts rust

Hi,

I was looking at a 1997 4Runner and the struts/shocks holding the rear hatch were all corroded. Is it hard and expensive to replace those? I know the front and rear bumpers were completely rusted but have been replaced. I also notice some rust on some of the components inside the engine compartment. I didn't look under the truck though, but of all places, there is one small rust spot on the driver's side rear door sill too. I'm thinking there's too much small rust here and there to get it. Just wondering what you guys think. I'm worried that the small bits and pieces of rust might become a big problem later. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to look underneath, but have you seen the rear bumper completely rust out, but the frame still be ok?

You'll want to get under there and look.

Oh John, where are u buddy? :naughty:

Personally i would stay away from the models that have rust on the sills and body, but the bumpers are an easy fix, and they don't mean the frame has holes in it, it is probably surface rust and can be cleaned off with a wire brush. I only say no to the body and sill rust because it isnt as easy of a fix.

Brian were you refering to me?

Probably! didnt rust decimate your rear bumper at one time. =)

Thanks for your response. The only reason I looked at it is that it was a lot cheaper than ones of the same mileage in our area. When I opened the hood, I saw rust on joints and some metalic parts in the engine bay. The rust was visible on both sides of the engine bay, but like all the rust I saw in this vehicle, it's only patches here and there. It was from a snowy place so maybe that's probably why.
