Is this a tailgate from a 1996 to 1998 4Runner??

Hello all,

I'm looking for a replacement tailgate for my '96 and want to get one from a '96 to '98 because they share the same guts.

I found one at a junkyard and I'm being told it's from a '98 at the latest. It looks more like it's from a '99 to me, based on the badging locations. Is it possible it's from a late '98? I suppose I could check the plug before I buy it, but I'd rather not waste the trip if it's clearly from a later model.

Thanks in advance for any help from someone on the forum who knows the details between the years better than I do.

If it is; just take the guts out and swap it over.

Thanks for the comment but the whole reason I posted is because that's exactly what I don't want to do.

The license plate garnish is a dead giveaway. That's more likely a 99-00 hatch. Could be 01-02 also.

Probably have to swap the guts from the original hatch over to the donor hatch. Not impossible but time consuming for sure

The quick question: did any of you actually do/complete the swap, and therefore can confirm everything lines up and works once done?

Asking before I open a potential can of worms thinking the harness swap will do the job and for whatever reason it is different or it doesn't...

Correct, you have to keep the wiring and components to match your chassis. So the wiring modules, etc, need to match your rig.

The wiring of the original hatch plus all the modules, etc, in the other hatch will work. Don't mix and match not going to work. There are too many changes in the circuits from mid gen to late gen.

I wouldn't even try the wiper and the window regulators. [ they may but you have it all]

The metal hatches identical same with the doors and body panels.


This is the sake for the doors and engine harnesses. Always keep the original wire harnesses intact with their pieces. If you do. Your stuff works.

Sorry to bring back an old thread to life but I don't have enough posts to start my own thread yet. Trying to replace the rear hatch on a 2002. Sounds like a hatch from a 2000 or 2001 would also work, but might need to swap a box to get the alarm to work? Is that as simple as literally just unplugging the box from the new door and plugging in the box from the old door or is it more involved? Thanks!!
