Rear hatch won't lock remotely

Hi All

I have a '96 Hilux Surf (JDM 4Runner).

Everything on the tailgate was working perfectly - lock, remote lock, wiper, defog etc.

Earlier in the week I opened the tailgate with the key (while the rest of the car was locked).

Now the tailgate no longer locks or unlocks remotely (by turning the key in the driver's door). Everything else works perfectly still. No problem to lock / unlock the tailgate with the key.

Any suggestions? I guess I need to go in again and look... sigh.

Thanks

My lock mechanism was pretty gunked up with dust and dried grease. It took a near full disassembly to get it back in reliable working shape. You may have to do the same.

Don't do like I did and wait for the night before a desert trip to do it. :D

Thanks. I'll add it to the list of jobs to do (not quite the night before) I set off on this year's big drive!

Check the wiring on the top of the hatch. Inside that rubber boot, the wires tent to break and cause no lock and other issues. I have this issue on my 2000.

There a goofy little plastic thing hooked to the door lock actuator inside the hatch. They get gunked up or worn down over the years and don't like to slide freely so they sometimes don't want to fully engage and let you open the hatch. It'll still open with the key because it uses a separate mechanism. It's easy to pop the interior cover off the hatch and clean and lube (graphite based or light weight lithium based grease) most of the time that'll get it working again.

You'll want to verify that the actuators working though, have someone hit the button while you listen for it opening and closing inside the hatch.
