rear liftgate issues

I'm having issues with the locking mechanism on my lift gate...whenever i try to close it the locking doesn't retract and my door will not shut and lock the right way.. i have to push the handle to the right position.. i have sprayed wd-40 in there with no luck....

Have you looked at the latch at the bottom? Mine had a bent latch that was causing it to not lock as well

looked today after work..nothing looked bent to me
