Rear liftgate latch raincover

Hi all, our 2008 4Runner SR5 has developed a weird problem. The plastic or rubber rain cover over the rear liftgate latch is torn and sticky and black gooey stuff gets on your fingers when you operate the latch. Has anyone heard of or experienced this problem and if so, what did you do to correct it. My wife is nagging me to fix this and I don't want to go to the dealer. Thanks for any input or ideas Glenn

Common problem - same thing happened to mine as well. You'll need to replace the switch. If I recall, it's around $28 on Ebay. Do a quick search on here, because there's a guide on how to replace it. Very easy.

Fullboogie, thanks. Found the part on ebay, back door switch assembly new OEM part #84840-35010, $33.00 Apparently the switch somehow melts.

Give yourself about an hour or so. There is a great write up with pics somewhere around here.It is easy after you read it. I did mine...and trust me, if I can do it with ease you can probably do it drunk and still do it faster than I did.
