I have a 2006 4Runner and have the same issues as dirtysparks - my rust bubbles started a little over a year ago and are now visible over the rubber seal. I opened a case with Toyota about 6 months ago and they refuse to do anything about it. The rep I have spoken to refuses to accept the fact it is a factory install issue and that since there are no customer service cases open then it's not an issue. I love my Toyota otherwise and planned on keeping it until it died but this irritates the crap outta me!!

my 2003 is having the same issue. this thing has been well taken care of its whole life and this is driving me crazy!

with how bad it is is it worth replacing the rear hatch or should i be looking at repairing it?

Mine looks very similar to the others at 2 spots on the right side of the window by the weatherstripping. I had the Toyota body shop treat the surface rust bubbling, repair and repaint the rear hatch for $760 (basic natural white color). Looks like a new hatch now.

Tailgate repair

Here a pic of my rusty tailgate !!! I start the removal of rust on it. Its been the third time that a repair have been done on it! This Time it Will not rust anymore because i Will build it with fiberglass.

Saw this thread and checked out my lift gate on my 2006... All rust under the seal. Has anyone had any luck getting toyota to repair this under some sort of warranty?

I have a 2003 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V8. It has significant rust perforation all along the top of the rear window. You cannot see it by just looking at the vehicle, but if you just use your fingers and fold down the rubber that surrounds the rear window along the top, all the of rust perforation is visible. I also have rust bubbles forming below the license plate, as a result of moisture getting inside the liftgate, likely from the rust perforation above the rear window.

Does anyone else have this issue? I believe that this is a manufacturer's defect. The "expressed warranty" for rust perforation has expired, but the courts have shown that an "implied warranty" for reasonable durability for rust perforation is anywhere from 7-11 years.

A Toyota recommended bodyshop has put the cost at $2,500 Cdn (have to replace the entire rear liftgate).

I am going to go to Small Claims Court to make this claim against Toyota Canada.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this same issue?

Did the courts rule in your favor? I have a 2005, and the entire interior of the trunk is rusted and it will cost $2,500 to fix it. I have 116,000 so I am definitely out of warranty. Did that 11 years hold? Very important! Thanks!

Interior rusting on 2004 4Runner Trunk?



The wiring to this unit was all frayed, apparently from the rusting, and was working until an idiot cut all the wires including the trunk one. Now Toyota dealer tells me that I need basically a whole new interior for my trunk. That the design of the 4Runner trunk enables and speeds up rust in this area. I am quite skeptical because very few other people are complaining about this issue. Also, The back window and the metal seal at the bottom are "one piece". You cannot buy just the rusted metal seal at the bottom. You have to buy the window AND the seal. But when I asked the dealer to remove the metal piece and the rusted bolts so see if there was damage to the window (I have full glass coverage), he refused.
