Rear main seal repair cost?

My truck is 2000 4wd auto. Changed the oil a week ago and noticed the bottom of the bell housing and steering rack dripping in oil. Seems to me that I caught the leak just in time. A very trusted shop up my street quoted me $380 to replace both seals with OEM. He's gonna drop the tranny which will take two days since his shop is always super busy. Was wondering what other things I should replace while the tranny is out. My truck has 213k. Two months ago I already had all the trans fluid replaced with new. 12qts and all.
How much did you pay for a RMS job?

It really is a great price. He told me that normally he would charge 700 but he always hooks it up with a discount. I've been going to him for all my big repairs for years and my dad longer than that. I wouldn't let anyone else touch my truck.

I would do valve cover seals first. (Including the half moons and cam plug) I had the same oil dripping everywhere and when I pulled the engine to put in another rig the rear main was dry as a bone.

This is my bet too. Valve cover gaskets are super common on these trucks, rear mains not so much.

I checked my valve cover gaskets with a mirror and flashlight. Little bit of seepage but not dripping to the point where it started leaving a small puddle underneath the truck. But it is something I will change in the near future however I will do it myself since its a relatively simple job.

Do it first. You would be supprised. Those round rubber plugs leaked on my 96 engine pretty good.

Whatever you do, buy and supply the Toyota seals.

Make sure to source the manual torque specs.

Like others said, that's a SUPER fair price to pull the transmission to do a rear main seal. It's a ton of work. I bet if somebody priced that job at my local Toyota dealership, it would be over $1000 because their labor rates are $150/hr and they won't cut you any slack on the time the book says even if they can do it much quicker.

Agreed. That job would be over $1k at any shop really, not just the stealership.

Hell, for $500, sounds like he would do OP's VCG and RMS.
