rear right axle seal blew! what did i do to deserve this?

rear right axle seal blew, its gonna cost $330 in parts and labor to fix. i wonder i musta done to have blew the seal. can possible wear and tear blow it?

since it blew and soaked the rear right brake shoes in grease, the shoes are going to need replacing too. the shop is charging $114 for labor, and $30 for hardware kit (which according to them are the small springs and such), while I supply them with the brake shoes. (the prices are for both sides, not just the right side). do these prices seem right or too high?

p.s. i got the MK brand brake shoes. are they any good? they were more expensive than the centric or bendix brand. and they are imported from japan.

ouch its a really simple job to replace it basic hand tools if worried about the brakes just bring it to someone sounds like the diff breather was clogged

Rear Seal

The passenger side seal blowing out is pretty common. Do a search in the forms and you'll find a few people who have had it.

As for the fix... I went to a friends house and we did my seal. It wasn't something I was comfortable doing on my own. It definintely took a few tools I didn't have. The brakes were easy so no prob doing those.

The $330 price tag isn't a bad amount to be charged. I think my latest quote was for over 700.

yeah... i dont feel experienced enough to be messing around with taht. also, i don't have a lot of tools. i live in an apartment complex, and they don't allow you to do anything to your car except tire changes! otherwise i could get cited and fined.
