Rear Seat Audio

When I first bought this 03 the previous owner told me he purchased it from Toyota used. It didn't have a passenger light unit in it so they put the upgraded one you see below in the pictures. He told me it didn't work because this year model never had it. Today I decided to get a batter for the remote and see for myself and it came on!

I can go through the radio stations and change the cd in the cd changer but the main system wont switch itself. So is the rear supposed to have headphones or something. It didn't come with the owners manual so I have no clue what should be operational and what shouldn't.

Yea. I have the rear system as well. Never, ever, ever use it. These days everyone has a phone with music on it.

But to your question, yes, it ONLY works with headphones. Wireless headphones you can get online or at your dealer.

Personally... not worth it.

That's about what I figured. I at least have a remote for the radio now though ha. Sent you some rep.

I consider it one of those failures attributed to a glorious idea, if it had been done a decade earlier.

By 2003, when the 1st year of this gen came out and offered this, MP3 players were already common place. Had this been an option in say 1995, oh hell yea! Portable CD players were still expensive and battery life sucked. The parents could listen to the radio, the kids whatever grunge band they wanted.

But 2003? It was DOA on arrival... which is why when I bought my truck, the remote had the original battery in it (long dead) and appeared to have never been used. The remote was safely tucked away in the owners manual.

I bet the original owner bought it, chuckled and stored it away.

Yup, rear seat audio system is pretty useless. I've long ago forgotten what I did with the headphones and I've never even seen the remote!

Well I also agree with you guys. Rear seat audio is not important in this one.

Yes, the JBL system comes with a seperate rear radio for use with wireless headphones for children riding in the back

I sold my two pair of headphones on ebay and just last week found the remote tucked away in a cabinet in the garage....selling the remote on ebay too. I did the same with the headphones and remote I had for my wife's 2005 Sienna. Believe it or not people still buy this stuff.

so all the remotes are universal to any truck? i can just grab up any i find for sale? also any links to a place to get headphones that sinc up, I have a thought to wire up some head rest display and run there audio to a FM transmitter and use the rear audio system to allow passengers to watch videos and what not while i play my music

Could this "remote" be removed?

I know this thread is long ago dead.

But if anybody knows about I will appreciated an answer:

Could this Rear Passenger remote be removed without affecting any other "system" in the car?

Like 2 years ago I removed the Main components in my 2003 Limited with JBL Sinthesys (Head unit, Amplifier and Subwoofer) but I keep the Speakers and connected them to my 10" flat Stereo (Weight less than 3 pounds) Speakers works fine.

How I travel a lot in Highlands, I am trying to save as much dead weight as I could, and removing this could be a good idea if useless.
