Rear Seat USB Install

The kids have their gadgets and pretty much everything can be charged with USB these days. I wanted to simply the process a bit and eliminate some of the wiring clutter.

I purchased a Blue Sea dual port USB outlet from Amazon. It puts out 2.1 amps and will charge Apple products (according to the reviews).

The biggest question was where to put it. There isn't really space due to the air vent duct in the back. In the end, I just decided to let it intrude into the ducting. Here are some photos. I ran the wires under the center console and put it on the cigarette lighter circuit. Note that the back plastic for the console pulls up and out. You really don't have to remove the console to do this.

To address the air duct being intruded, could you not intall it on he duct, and fit the cover over it, then close it? that way, you could seal it using, say, automotive grade silicon, and there would be no AC leak... Air would actually come out a bit faster, too.

I dont have a 110 plug in my Sport and I have been thinking of where to put one. I really like this location and did not realize the ease of access.

You could probably do that but it would be tricky getting the outside hole drilled exactly right and if the hole gets dinged up, the mounting ring wouldn't cover it. It'd be really easy to make it look bad instead of close to factory.

Did the outlet you bought on amazon come with wires or did you use your own? If so, what kind did you use?

No wiring included but the outlet has standard 0.250 male spade connectors so you just need a couple of female ones to connect to it. I'm guessing but I probably used something in the 18 gauge range for the wire.

Rear seat Cigarette Socket Car

I just finished this mod on my 2007 4runner. It was inspired by this thread. I went with the cigarette socket because it seems like you can get the USB adapters with higher outputs then all-in-one USB sockets. In addition, the cigarette socket is someone future proof. USB ports seem to keep changing. In addition, the kids can plug their LCD TV screens on the back of the heard rest into this which have a cigarette socket type.

It wasn't the cheapest solution but this mod is made out of high quality parts and it is 12 awg wire all the way from the fuse tap to the cigarette socket. I don't mind spending the extra money if it is quality and looks nice.

I'm looking at adding a AC port next. If anyone has pictures of how they did it, send me a message.

charge test results

I ran a charge test using the new cigarette socket and USB car adapter. The results are good. I used the ampere app and base lined against a AC adapter I have. The eho AC 100w-GaN USB-C wall charger (model: p310a) I have quick charges very well, it was the fastest charger I had in the house until the new 165 watt cig charger. The new 165 watt adapter I installed is twice as fast. Charging my ipad pro in 1% in 39 seconds vs the AC adapter charging at 1% every 79 seconds.
