Rear Shock Mount Rot

My rear shock mount completely rotted out and broke

I assume this is going to be a pricey fix since its mounted onto the frame. Is this a common issue or perhaps even a recall? Even though the rot there is pretty nasty, the rest of the 4Runner is pretty clean from rust. Thanks for any input.

is it completely rusted through.. like ready to crumble? Ive definitely seen it before on my previous ones but never deemed it bad enough to fix. You could consider cutting out the rust and putting a reinforcement plate in and drill a hole for the shock.. or can you consider relocating shock mounts?

Yeah, its completely gone... nothing but a hole there as seen in the pic.

You've got some very bad rust going on.

My 3rd gen is pretty rust free but I had a heck of a time removing the rear shocks when I upgraded. The top of the pocket collects dirt and water and adds to the corrosion (on mine at least).

Somewhere in my internet searching of how to remove my shocks (ended up needing pipe wrenches and a sawzall) I found some guys that replaced the mounts. I don't think they had corrosion issues as much as they wanted to run longer shocks that had a different mount than our stud style mount.

I'm unaware of a replacement bucket but I would cut out what you have and build or have an another one built. The hardest part (for me at least) would be welding it back in. There is very little space up there and your frame looks less than stellar to work on.

While you're crawling around the truck check the body mounts as well for broken mounts.

There are tiny drain holes in this area, but they frequently get clogged, and allow moisture to stay trapped up there. They are shaped like a little bowl, so its a perfect place for rust to develop.

From the picture and what your saying it seems like it is only the shock that broke...not the mount/seat where the shock bolts to. You might just be looking for a new rear shock

If it is the mount rotted, you could easily take a trip to a local junk yard and see if you can get one cut off a junked frame and just weld a new one on. that's what Id probably be doing if it was me.

I know this thread is old. I just recently signed up since I just bought a 2000 Toyota 4runner and just had this issue. I am going to call junkyards to see if I can get the mount cut out and replace it on the truck. But seeing as there is very limited space to work on. I have seen people do rear shock modifications. I am not looking to add a lift or bigger tires. I am perfectly happy with the car stock. Could a relocation be done to run the same stock shocks? I would appreciate any help since I am very new to this.

It was a poor poor design to begin with even if you don't factor in rust. It's like a mini swimming pool for salt and moisture and debris to gather in.

That's why when I fixed mine. I put a gallon of fluid film in there lmfao.

Yeah I knew of it but to be honest I wasn't really aware of the affected areas. I bought it from an original owner that owned it for 17 years but since I live in South Texas, he would go to the island frequently and with the poor design it just was a matter of time before it gave out.

It ran me little under $200. It's a OEM toyota replacement part. It's not a easy job. But it's doable. Much easier on a lift.

Thank you very much. I just messaged him in regards to the issue. I was wondering if the job could be done from the top. I read that someone had the same issue as planning on going from the top and welding the new piece in.

From the top? Sure, if you remove the body or cut two huge holes in the floor. I don't see how otherwise.
