Rear spare suggestions?

You people are costing me a fortune with your kickass ideas... anyway, I'm now officially addicted and want to add a swingaway spare mount.

I am digging the RIGd UltraSwing, though it's fairly pricey at over a grand. Maybe that's standard for these things. Not sure.

Anyway, I want one that's close to flush, reliable, stable, and easy to install.

Three questions:

1) What's the skinny with using the trailer hitch afterwards? I am building a cabin and have to take large loads of timber up the mountain on my trailer (2" ball) frequently and there's no way I'm putting something on the vehicle that will negatively impact my ability to do that. Any thoughts?

2) What about the backup camera? I need to use it frequently and don't know much about moving/rewiring one.

3) What's the impact of the ladder on the driver's side? Are there specific swingaway rear spare mounts that can accomodate the Gobi ladder I already have on the vehicle?

Any help y'all can give me will be much appreciated!

I've been looking at the Ultraswing for a while now, it's likely my next purchase as I want to be MOAB ready come summer. Other common options are the Detours of Maine and Wilco. Detours looks solid, but i've read too many reviews of poor communication with the fab guy, and long lead times.

The gobi ladder will fit behind the tire, seems to be no issue. How do I know this? Install vids on youtube. Hitch thing I can't help on. Backup camera will have to be relocated. There are kits for such a task, not too hard I hear other than you'll have to get used to a new angle on your head unit display.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll check out those other options.

It's my next deal too, but I got some unfortunate news from UltraSwing. There's no way to keep the backup sensors with it. That means turning them off and so no forward sensors either.

The towing still works, the ladder fits, and you can move the backup camera, but you're screwed on the sensors.

I'm gonna keep looking at non-swing away options, or try to find something other than the UltraSwing so I can keep the sensors on, but if I don't I'm gonna buy it and just listen to my wife ***** about the sensors. ;-)
 
I have nearly 200 trail runs on the 4Runner and I am yet to understand what the problem with the stock spare location is. Drags? But that's great! The spare tire takes dragging over rocks very well, serving as a skid plate. Between a stiffer rear suspension, the spare, and anything in the hitch (either a protector or just a recovery insert) the rear bumper ends up being surprisingly well protected when coming off ledges or bigger rocks.

My intent is to have a full size spare tire, which necessitates the need for a rear tire swing. Could I throw one up on my rack? Sure, but now I lose cargo room up top as well as the huge pain in the butt of having it up top if I need to utilize it.

What size are you running that cannot fit underneath? 34"?

I'm in the same boat you are but worse. My spare is still the highway tread 20, and I'm on all-terrain 18s. Hahahaha... GOT to get this figured out quickly. I may actually see if there's a way to move the backup sensors and still have the UltraSwing, to keep the wife from shitting her liver.

The Rigd tire carrier, afaik, is the only one that is actually tested in a tow facility and rated at 10,000lbs. So more than a 4Runner can legally tow anyways.

They also sell a reverse camera relocation kit that replaces the stock camera instead of splicing into the oem system, which I like. You won't be messing with the oem wiring and can change your mind on it at any point later. You can adapt this to any tire carrier or bumper as well.

Should not have any issues with running a ladder. I've seen plenty of people running a hitch mounted swing out and gobi or c4 ladder.

A 285/70-17 AT3 fit perfectly in my spare tire location. No KDSS, but, I’ve read where members are getting this size to fit, it’s just tighter. Someone makes UHMW spare tire skid plates for this location too.

I have a Detours carrier on order. My experience with an 80 series land cruiser with same underside spare setup drove me to this. Rust issues above the spare due to collection of road salt and bottoming out in deep sand (beach) several times.

Using a spare tire as a skid plate seems like you’re gonna have a baaaaaaaad day when you need it lol.

Does your spare have a tpms monitor in it? If so I’m going to imagine it doesn’t mess with your unit reading the 4 tires with it so close by.

Yes. I had a TPMS put in as I am doing a 5 tire rotation. BTW, the factory spare does not have a TPMS.

I went ahead and ordered the table and then decided to add the optional slide out. As it turns out I ordered the wrong size slide out and having only days before my trip called RigD. They sent me the right size overnight.
It was incredible service.
Just as a point or reference... I am not a serious off roader. The white rime trail was my first off road experience and that is not a difficult road. I had my factory spare under the 4runner and a second spare in the UltraSwing. (Yes I know this is overkill). So far as I can tell the only thing that ever scraped was the trailer hitch. And I mean the hitch itself not the one on the UltraSwing.

I couldn't agree more. Added one RIG'd Ultraswing and no regrets. Holding a 33" Falcon Wild Peak and a 4 gallon Rotopax. Camera installed, but not yet hooked up.
At 62 years old the roof rack just is not an option for storage, and underneath is not much better. The Ultraswing holds the tire at chest level. Easy lift on and off, even for an old fart.
Heading down to Big Bend NP & Big Bend Ranch SP the first week of March and will put the truck and Ultraswing through several hundred miles of old mining roads spread over 1.1 Million acres of off road playground. We will see if it lives up to it's reputation...
