Rear Spoiler - Epiphany

The rear spoiler on the 3rd gen is more functional than attractive.

I have always wondered what it would look like without the air foil and how it drives.

It drives the same sans the slalom coarse.

I have been driving my 2nd 4runner for a while now and it is minus the air foil. Looks good but the rear window is constantly dirty.

The V8 runner 's window never seams to be dirty.

So the rear spoiler is very functional.

Yeah my rear window stays nice and clean on my 4runner. My wife's Mazda 3 hatch also has a rear spoiler and the back window stays pretty clean. I haven't even washed my 4runner in 4 months now and it is still plenty clean.

I just bought a used spoiler, painted and installed it.

It doesn't drive any different, of course I'm not running at 150mph either. :)

Mine doesn't have one, I like the looks of the spoiler personally and will be adding one, the worst part about not having it is how dusty the back window gets, and when the window is down, the dust flies right in the window.

x2 on this. I've been shopping for a rear spoiler for the '97 for a while now.

Don't you know that the spoiler helps to hold it to the ground, while going 100mph around turns? DUH IT'S FUNCTIONAL!!! Why do you think gangsters of the Mexican and Asian gangs put them on there?!?! For looks?!?!

Hahaha. Sorry. Pain pills are making me loopy, but I thought it was funny.

Dust and vehicle exhaust.
I believe the primary reason is to keep the vehicle exhaust from coming in the open rear window while driving.

Mine didn't come with one either...bought one from another member for $20. Sand blasted it and then powder coated it a nice semi-gloss black...add an OEM roof rack at the same time/same color. Actually was very easy it install...a buddy and me installed it in less than 45 minutes. Huge difference on how clean the back window stays clean. Not sure about keeping the exhaust out...way too dang cold to roll the windows down!

You know what looks cool? A Hilux Surf SSR-G rear spoiler with power backup mirror! I know a guy...

don't forget it cuts down on wind noise as well for when you have the back cracked for your dog to stick his head out and smile at the people behind you!:reddance:

good to hear to was pretty painless to install, i've just about almost given up on the now discontinued super secret Canadian only spoiler, and am going to have join mediocrity with the rest of you, haha :wink2:
