Rear Spoiler Opinions (04 Sport)

Anyone have opinions on the rear spoiler for a 04 Sport V6 4x4? Does the current version help keep the rear window clean like the older versions, or is it mostly just looks? Any opinions? Is it worth the money for the add on, or is it just a waste of money?

You guys have been great answering my questions so far. This has been one of the best resources I've found on the net. I frequent a couple great digicam forums, so I know the best way to get the lowdown info is from real users.

It seems to keep the rear window cleaner than the last SUV I had without one but it seems to collect an awful lot of dirt. Cars get dirty real fast in NY metro so I'm used to claening the windows frequently.
And I think it's worth the extra $$ just for the look. Did you look at to 4Runners at the same time, one with and one without? I think it looks unfinished without it.
I've been told it will help keep the back end down at high speed as well. :moon:

I still haven't decided whether I like the looks of mine, but it sure works well. I had spoilers on a '92 and an '02 and they didn't work nearly as well as this one on the '04.

I cannot tell you if it makes a difference because I have never driven a 4Runner without a spoiler. The back window stays pretty clean. It does get some dust on it, but it usually does not get to the point where I ever have to clean it. I think you should get the spoiler for the looks alone. If you park yours next to one with a spoiler, you will see the difference. It gives the back a much sportier look. In the New York/New Jersey area, I would say 90-100% of the sports are shipped with the spoiler from the factory. Dealer could not located one without a spoiler!

It does keep the rear window clean

I had the misfortune of being stuck in a Jeep Cherokee for a few days. During that time I noticed the rain was not blowing off the rear window.

On my 4Runner I notice the rain forcefully streaming down the back window.

You guys are right, the rear spoiler and gate get pretty funky though.

Thanks for all the great input. Sounds like the spoiler is a good idea. Most of the trucks I saw on the lot did not have the spoiler, so I wasn't able to compare them. I'll make a note of it next time I'm at the dealership though.

I've been trying to find a rear spoiler myself but I have a different problem. I fly a hang gliders and I transport it on the roof rack. The problem is that when I open the rear door with the glider on the roof, the top of the rear door is getting marked but the glider. Unfortunatly, the "standard" Toyota rear spoiler would only agrivate the situation so I'm looking for a plastic one like those that was found on the earlier 4Runners. Any suggestions where I may find one of these that is wide enough for the '03 4Runner.
