Rear spoiler removal

I'm still waiting for a 4Runner in my color to come available, so i still don't have one...

but since I want a moonroof, the option package it comes with also includes the rear spoiler -- my own personal preference is i don't like it, just not my cup of tea.

so, i'm wondering can the rear spoiler be taken off??? Can the dealer remove it for me, and if so, will it cost?

Easy to take off, but you will have mounting holes to deal with and you will also be missing your 3rd brake light.

Ditto what Even Steven said. I'm not sure of the cost but you will be left with some gaping holes that will need to be covered, painted, and refinished. Additionally, you will have no center brake light as it will be left on the spoiler. You will have to find a shop that will punch a new hole into your hatch for the center light. 4runners with factory installed spoilers just have a "blank" area on the metal hatch where the brake light would be if it didn't have a spoiler. I figure it would be easier to try and find a 4runner without one from the start.

thanks for the great info, fellas!

the moonroof is important to me, so i guess i'll have to make do with the rear spoiler, for now :nono:

It would be expensive, but you can take it to a body shop and have them order and put in a non-spoilered hatch.

After market

Buy the 4r without both the moon roof & the spoiler and have a moon roof installed aftermarket.

I went thru this same thing with my previous Jeep Grand Cherokee. The moon roof I had installed was a Webasko or something like that and had a life of the car warrenty. The Jeep warrenty was only 36000 miles.

After this thread I would hesitate to put in an aftermarket sunroof, even though it sounds like you had a much more positive experience than the OP.

Oh for the love of God, dont get an aftermarket sunroof!!!! :awais:

Can it not be special ordered without the rear spoiler??? I hate em too, mine's an SR5 and it did not come with the spoiler and Im thankful for that, but the sunroof was also not on my Runner and I made the HUGE mistake of having one put in. Maybe some others have had better experiences with aftermarket sunroofs, but mine's a HORROR STORY which is still unfolding as I type.

Good luck though whichever way you decide to go.... ;):

I don't really care about the spoiler when I bought mine, just came with the options that I wanted. After seeing one without, I am glad mine has the spoiler. Just my opinion though YMMV :D

Sure it can. I have a 4wd V8 Sport with a sunroof and no spoiler that I had special ordered. That exact combination was important enough to me that it was worth the 4 month wait.

You guys do know that the rear "spoiler" is not for looks only, but actually has a function. My last Jeep Grand Cherokee did not have the rear air diffuser, and the rear window was ALWAYS caked with grime, dirt, etc. Having the rear wing helps the rear window keep clear.

You would not believe how fast your rear window gets filthy without this gizmo---especially in winter after a snow storm.

On my 2004 sports edition the rear window is always caked with a bunch of road grime, even though I have factory spoiler.

You could always see if you can find a non-spoiler equiped 4Runner buddy close by to swap with! :)

Then imagine it without the wing. :p

Maybe you should upgrade to a Pepboys special. :D

oh, i thought you were gonna say something like "it increases downforce at high speeds to prevent fishtailing"

Well if you ever change your mind about adding a spoiler later, JAOS has you covered :p ...

Might as well stick a couple on the front while you're at it...
