It's held on with two bolts and two clips. You remove the bolts from behind with the back door open, and then you can gently pry the spoiler loose from the clips on either side.
Total removal would require plugging/patching the four holes, and also doing something about replacing the third brake light.

SJ - nice set up. We have 3 boats - all sit on tops (14',12' and a 9 foot Prijon Twister play boat to surf with) but no pull behind rig. That thing must make camping like home? Does it have AC or do you not need it out west?
I have busted up my spoiler a bit as well loading the boats. It's hard to keep them off it if you load from the back. All of the marks are pretty much on the top or back edge and with the lift you can't em unless the lid is in the open position. Also the plastic is kind of the color of the truck so they don't stand out much. I was thinking about addding some felt or something to the top just to make it slide easy but, they may look too red neck. Not sure about removing it. Should not be to hard but like mentioned you will have some holes to fill. I have also see a addition to a Yak rack that sticks out to the side that lets you load from the back but then slide it over. Good luck and tell us about the rig. Sleeps how many? Any awning? Where do you take it? How bout some pix of it in action?

The hi-mount 3rd tail lamp would be my main concern. If his 4Runner, like mine, came with not even a cutout (just an indented shape where the cutout would be) I think it would look sort of goofy.
Of course, if you're handy with a Dremel or other metal cutting device, I guess you could cut out the opening and install a factory "non-spoiler" 3rd tail lamp in there - and have the factory appearance anyway.
If it doesn't matter, then it doesn't matter. Yank the spoiler off and have at it.
I do dig that little pull-behind camper tho. Very retro looking...neato. lol
