Rear spring recommendations to compliment KYB?

Hello all,

2007 4runner 4wd v8 Limited

I just replaced the front struts with KYB SR4130 (and SR4131)

And the rear shocks with KYB 344410 Excel-G Gas Shocks

But, to my surprise, KYB appears to not offer rear springs? At least I could not find them here:

Not looking to lift, willing to stiffen up the ride a little but not a ton (as the KYBs have done), 99.9% street driven, 3 times a year it is in 4x4 mode on loose gravel/dirt or snow covered streets for 10 miles or so (i.e. mild terrain), 15 times a year I'll tow a boat or load the back-end with 400 lbs of cargo.

Any recommendations to compliment the KYBs I just installed?

Checking in. The Moog 81045's fit with no issues. (I read a number of threads that had me a little nervous about fit issues, but no problems at all.) 150k miles and the relaxed spring heights were the same between the old stock springs and the Moog's. Considerably more coils on the Moogs.

Definitely stiffer, which I'm not sure if I like or dislike yet. Not a crazy amount, but there. I can't help but wonder if I went OEM that it'd be near the same stiffness just due to new parts.

That said, I really really like the control I've gained. I don't feel like I'm bouncing around or slipping around when taking a curvy bumpy road. And those intersections that I used to fear taking at 45 miles an hour due to bottoming out are now handled like a champ.

Hey, crew. We just installed the KYB SR4119 and SR4120 front quick struts in our 2008 4wd 4runner. When we got done, the front was about 1.5” lower than it was with the 12 year old oem suspension we replaced. And the springs are incredibly compressed at rest. This didn’t match up with all the reviews I’ve been reading (they all say the KYB’s lift an inch or so).

I got back on to Rock Auto and noticed that the part description said “RWD” for the springs I bought.

There was another set listed (SR4130 and SR4131) and it said “4WD” in that description. I didn’t buy those because they didn’t have the little American flag next to the part numbers.

But now, I suspect there are different parts entirely for the 2wd vs 4wd 4runners.

I’m hoping you can point me in the right direction here. Are there different spring rates or entirely different front shocks/springs for 2wd vs 4wd 4runners?

If I take the currently installed KYB’s out and buy/install the 4130/4131, will I get the lift back that I lost??

This is all new to me. Thanks much for your help. A lift isn’t the goal here. I just wanted to replace the old OEM suspension. If I get an extra inch lift in front from KYB’s that’s fine. But as I sit right now, we’ve got way too much rake.

Ya you bought the wrong set, you need the 4130/4131 , also make note which one is driver side and which one is passenger side before you put them on.

yep, you got the wrong part#'s. buy the correct 4wd ones & you will get the stock height back plus about 1-1.5" after they settle.

i replaced my xreas shocks at 145k & the KYB's are great shocks at a great price. heres mine after a couple thousand miles, front is about 1" higher than stock & rides great.

Did you end up nose high after install but after settling we’re you back to level or a little bit of rake?

the kybs will settle. when i installed mine & first put it on the ground they were very high, like 2.5-3" higher than stock. after about 500 miles they settled about .5" & after 1000 miles they settled to where it is in the pic i posted, id say 1-1.5" above stock. & now at 2000+ miles they are still the same.

the height gained after kyb install depends on how worn out the stock shocks/springs were. if they were worn a lot then the increase would be more than if they weren't worn/sagged that much.

when i say mine gained 2.5"+ that is compared to the worn out front shocks/springs i had at 145k miles. that 2.5 settled to about 2" very quick after a few hundred miles. then what its at now i am comparing to what a stock ride is like, another member measured his stock height with lower miles & i measured mine after ~2000 miles & came out to be about a 1" gain over stock height.

my rear springs were not worn or sagged much if at all, probably due to the fact the prev owner was a little asian lady that never towed or loaded the rear with any weight.

also mine is a sport with xreas that may be different than SR5 shocks. but regardless of the difference, the kybs added a nice front lift & is closer to level than it was with worn shocks/springs or when they were new. i may add a small spacer if i want to be closer to actual level or the shocks settle more after a year or 2 & 10,000 miles.

what brand 1/4" spacers did you use?

To the original question, you can’t go wrong with FJ rear springs. They fit perfectly & can often be found at a great price. This is my truck with FJ rears & used 4600s (& some weight on the back with my Yakima rack & bike). Details are in the “X-REAS delete...” post linked in my sig.
