I was able to change mine without removing the wheels.
Ive ran the Interco TSL Thornbird's on my old toyota (Also had a set on 1 of my VW baja's) & unless you have them aired way down (like 15 ish lbs) they will also contribute to the rough ride! They are Extremely stiff! (I weigh about 145 & even with the tire off the wheel I could stand on the tread & not flex the side wall.) Thus transfer every bump to the suspension (that Obviously has issues) & then to you! The down side to bias ply tires are: really heavy, increased rolling resistance and less traction and control at higher speeds, other issues with the thornbird's are lots of noise, drifting on the road/poor handling, uneven ware, poor traction on most surfaces, porr tread life, etc. ... + the Interco are wider than the claimed width. The 30x9.50 15's I had on the baja were over 11" wide. The only benefit they have is that they are tough as hell! Ran over steel, Black locust trees, glass, etc & never even gouged the tire.
in my experience they weren't good in mud, snow, rain or sand. All that along with the other mentioned issues. So I took them off as soon as found another set of tires & never looked back!
just a few benefits of radial tires: reduced rolling friction of the tire, more breakaway grip, better fuel economy, longer tread life and better steering control.

Yeah. Already not a fan of the thornbirds. Got the hubs swapped out, replaced both cv axles and serviced the bearings up front. Here is a picture of the 4runner. I didn't know what to put in there for comparison. I want to replace the springs and maintain the ride height. What lift do you think I need. Tires are 33 12.50x15 on 8 inch wheels. It has a 3 or 4 inch body lift also. Not sure how thick the stock body mount bushingsbwete.
