Rear Suspension recall -- too late to get work done?

I purchased my '96 4runner in 2002, and never registered with Toyota Corporate. So, I never got the Recall bulletin.

After looking into the rear sag problem (which mine definitely has), I found the recall.

Two Questions for everyone:

1. Is it too late to have the service done?

2. How would I know if the previous owner had already gotten this recall serviced?

You can call your Toyota dealer and give them the VIN and they will look up the service record. I think they still do it. I had them check mine a while back (it had been done) but they talked like they would still do it if it wasn't done.

Look for a used set of OME 906 springs, good for a 2" lift from stock, it will get rid of the sag, work with all your other parts (shocks, brake lines, etc), and leave you with a bit taller rear compared to the front that can handle loads in the back, towing, etc without sagging, and still rides nicely. If you install them yourself (1 hour tops), you can do this for about $100, and won't need an alignment.

for a super cheap and quick fix until you get some new springs, you can go to autozone or kragen and get some spring spacers to put in and jack it up a little and improve ride and deminish some of that sag.

not sure if anyone is still reading this thread but just had a question. I had the rear suspension recall service done on my 97 4runner and afterwards the rear looked really low compared to how it did before; of course the dealer said everything is fine. anyway, after reading IanB's post about the 906 OME springs I was wondering if they might be a good fix. any advice would be great. thanks

They would be a solution. On normal height trucks they give around 2" of lift. If you are already sagging, it may be closer to 3" I would recommend them. However, if you just want to get back to stock, I have my stock rear springs still. I had no sag when I removed them. If you're interested in the stock ones let me know, I'll make you a deal on them.

Just picked mine up from the stealership from having the recall completed so you can still get it done.

It took going in to the dealership three times before they actually got it right (inspection, forgot to order the parts, parts came in but no one ever called to schedule service) but they finally got it done and the ride has definitely improved. I didn't notice a difference in height but the ride improvement is dramatic.

Yeah the dealer here was sloppy too. Took my runner in a year and a half ago to get the tranny flushed when I bought it and guy there didn't even tell me about the recall and ordered the parts without my knowledge. 2 months later I go to a different dealership to pick up a part and by this time I hear about the recall and thought I would check to see if it was done. They said the other dealership already ordered the parts and are waiting to be installed. No one ever mentioned anything to me. So I go over there and get them installed. They said the guy that helped me before got fired for doing some shady things.

Though I only had them for a couple months until I lifted it. In fact I still have them sitting in my garage basically brand new with about 1k miles on them.

I'm planning on lifting mine in May/June so I'll be in the same boat. But living in dc right now, the roads have so many pot holes that i feared it was going to do a number on my car

it has never been done in my 01 but I plan on some 99 springs.
