Rear suspension ?

It's been a long time since I've bought anything for the 4runner and I decided I wanted to soften the rear suspension. At the moment I'm running 8 wraps and land cruiser oem shocks. They are and always have been on the stiff side and I want something more on the soft side. I don't want to spend icon money replacing these so I was wondering people's thoughts on Fox 2.0s and maybe bilstein . The only issue I have with bilstein is they are a boring purchase as I've owned several over the years for various vehicles. Fox seems to be the cheapest I can find with a cooler brand name than bilstein, haha. I just don't know how they ride.

The threads I've searched seem to start off talking about cheaper shocks but by the 3rd or 4th response we've already jumped to $1000 rear shocks

Ill be following this because I am also looking to purchase new shocks for my 8 wraps.

From my research, bilsteins seem to run on the stiff side. I guess it makes sense, since they are valved for the heavier land cruiser.

I've been looking at the fox 2.0's, would be interested in feedback on them.

Currently i've got cheapy Monroe's. They ride soft, but only lasted 15000 miles.

That's because once you get past the bilsteins, that's literally all that is available. Icon, Fox, King are all in the high budget set ups bro. Cheap is Monroe and Kyb route. Mid-range are Bilsteins and LC set up and High end is Fox, Icon, and King. Take your pic bro.

Tokicos are stiff. They usually help stiffen up the softer LC coils. Billys will give a more plush cadillac feel when install on LC coils.

These fox 2.0s I'm looking at are only about $60 more than bilstein. I just saw icons for only $110 more than bilsteins. I may go that route if they would match up well with the 8 wraps for a plush ride. Actually just noticed the icons are for 0-2" lift.

Ever thought about toytec lifts. I have the 3" toytec complete kit and it's been great. rides nice in the back. The front is a little stiff due to the high spring rate but planning on front steel bumper probably from savage offroad. However, I'm changing the rear suspension due to the weight I carry when camping. I'm also adding rear bumper/tire swingout. I just got the ome 861 paired with LC tokico shocks on the way. I read great review if you're running weights on the back. Not to jack thread but I will be selling the toytec rear suspension once I get the ome and tokico. Just a thought.

The icon and Fox rear shocks I've been looking at are on toytecs website. Right now, I have Eibach front Springs (purchased from toytec) and tundra bilsteins up front and am reasonably happy with that setup. I also have an AOR front tube bumper that provides about 80lbs (guessing) up front. Ive been collecting parts here and there for a simple rear bumper with swing out but I have no idea when I'll get around to putting that together.
 
Also following. I have the same set up in back as OP. Icon says their shocks are only good for 2" lift or less. My 8 wraps give me more then that even with my tools in the back. I'd hate to purchase them only to over extend them soon after.

I felt the exact same way when I had the lc lift in the back. Depending on how much lift you need, you could go with 99 coils and a small spacer in the back, with stock 3rd gen tokicos.

So a while back I switched out my coils from ome 890s in the back to 99s. But I still had the lc tokico shocks, and the ride was still quite stiff. Coils didn't really make much difference. I then swapped the lc tokicos with oem 3rd gen tokicos, and there was a substantial difference. It is certainly softer, and much better imo. So the shocks were the main factor. I've learned from experience that it's not so much rebound that affects the ride with my truck, but compression. A higher compression shock will really make the ride stiff. I'm running taco bilstein 5100s up front, and they are too stiff for my liking. I'm convinced that's it's more the compression than the rebound that causes it. So I'm planning on switching those to oem tokicos as well. So I'll be stock 99 all around.

Again depending on how much lift you "need", you can always go stock 99s. Like you I don't want to spend $2k or more on icon or king sus. And I've tried 5 different set ups both front and back. I'm done with all of it. You can't beat the oem suspension for a daily driver with a decent ride. Add a 1" spacer and you have a 2" ish lift with a softer ride

Use the 03+ 4th/5th gen shock, PN 56505 for 2.5-4" of lift.
 
If you have no weight in the rear then make sure you get something that is valved for a lighter vehicle instead of the heavier Land Cruiser. The nice thing about getting the nicer brand shocks is they are usually rebuildable. So if you get a bumper with tire swing and a bunch of other tools and equipment you can just revalve them for the added weight. LC coils are nice and soft so no need to worry about coils if your looking for a softer ride.

While we are on the subject of rear suspension, anyone have first hand experience with the toytec superflex or toytec 3" lift rear coils?

My main concern is, if you off road, spacers are a bad idea. Too much lift for the stock spring height and you'll over extend and CERTAINLY break your shocks.

I don't have any experience with tokicos but was told by SS that the blisteins (for a 3" lift) were softer than the tokicos. I have toytec's boss shocks & was told by them that they are supposed to be valved similar to the bilsteins they offer for the 3rd gen. I only have experience with the bilsteins & boss shocks but when both shocks were paired with the 890s, the bilsteins did seem slightly softer on a stock body 3rd gen without any armor.
