Rear Swing Out

So I'm building myself a rear swing-out :banana: I want to carry a tire and my jack, and Im considering adding a mount for two scepter gas cans.

I have seen a ton of guys with jacks and jerry cans, two tires, ladders, heck you name it. What I'm wondering is, how stable are the swing-outs themselves? Do they shake on washboards, if so how much? How do they handle with that much weight?

I mean a tire, jack and two gas cans is a few hundred pounds, and i have seen them fall off before :boom:

It all depends on how it's mounted, braced, and latched.

Whatever you do, please don't use a trailer spindle type of hing mounted in single shear. Those are what you see breaking off.

Just to clarify, you CAN use a spindle mount, I have and continue to do so on many tire carriers. What you can't do is weld the spindle, especially the lttle 1000lb capacity variety.

The proper way to do this is to weld a sleeve and PIN the spindle. This is what I used the last time I built one.

On my L/C I carry a 35" tire and 7 Gallons of water. My best friend's first gen has a similar design and he carries a 35" tire, two rotopax water jugs, a high lift, a shovel and a C02 tank.

Double sheer hinges work well too, it's all about your design and fab skills in the end.

Do you guys see any rattles and shakes with your setups?

I'm just curious more than anything. My setup is almost done now, I'm just worried about how much weight I should put on it. I wont carry gas cans all the time, so I'm kinda leaning toward mounting them elsewhere.

I don't get any rattles, it moves, but I don't hear anything. I use nylon pads where it contacts the bumper, and I use a locking pin at the latch end, so it shuts and stays, then I use a carr lane toggle clamp to pull it down against the bumper. One similar to this.

No rattles from mine. I can see it wiggle a little bit over bumps in the rearview, but it doesn't make any noise- only the highlift and d-rings do!
