rear tire carrier won't fit hitch

Hey guys - i just recently installed a curt hitch which i bought new and everything but my hitch mounted tire carrier fits it. The problem is not the diameter of it but the hole for the pin is not drilled far enough back on the tire carrier. The only fix i can imagine would be to buy an extender and see if it fits or re drill a hole further back on the tire carrier which would reduce its structural integrity.. what are your thoughts?

I am on vacation but once home will measure how far the new hole would be from the back of the hitch and from the other hole

if im understanding you right, the carrier bottoms out in the hitch before the hole lines up. cut some off the back of the carrier, so it goes deeper into the hitch.

most receivers are open, but I have a seen a few that are capped off. I don't care for that style.

sorry ill clarify - the hitch is open ended but the pin hole on the tire carrier is say about 3 inches from the vertical bar that holds the tire and the pin hole on the trucks hitch is about 4 inches back so i can't slide the tire carrier far enough into the hitch to match the pin holes. Id have to drill a hole in the hitch further up (opposite direction of where the engine is relative to the hitch) or else drill another hole on the hitch portion of the tire carrier

Are you hitting solid metal through the pin hole with it pushed in all the way? If so i would mark it and drill it. Wouldn't recommend it for a tow hitch, but almost no lateral load for a tire carrier so I think that would be fine.

thanks i was looking at the extenders but then the rear tire will stick out that much further from the hatch/body of the truck. I am hitting metal so i was thinking about drilling it.. i had plans to tow with the tire carrier (add a receiver to the end of it) as i have a very small utility trailer for camping. I think the best best for me is to re drill the holes and just make sure they aren't a millimeter away from the OEM holes

I can't quite picture what the issue is, but if the tire carrier slides into the receiver tube then it's 2x2" square tubing. Unless it has a very thin wall thickness you're not going to hurt the integrity of it at all by drilling a new hole so the pin will slide through.
