Transfer case dead?

Hello everybody.

I have a 2001 and have been diagnosing this 4WD issue for a while now, I have replaced all 4 sensors on the rear transfer case (2 on top, 2 on rear).

Now I have to test the rear actuator with 12v on pins 2 and 3 to see if I can get the actuator to move and into "4WD mode".

My question is, if this doesn't work am I basically out of luck and my rear transfer case assembly is bad? I know the part alone is over $1000+ and the labor is very intensive as well.

It would really suck to have to put that much money into my truck as I also just bought all my lift parts recently but don't really want to put the lift on before I am sure I can get my 4WD working.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If it's a "j" shift case, just put a manual one in there, and run the front diff actuator to a switch.

Don't you mean, if it's a push button/push forward style, just put a manual "J style" one in?

In any case, swapping t-cases is NOT labor intensive, there are 8 bolts that hold the t-case to the trans, takes all of 10 minutes once you have the driveshaft off. I just swapped t-cases last week.
 
Rear TC? I thought the 3rd gen just has one transfer case in the front near the skid plate. Am I missing something?

Oh right, basically the dealer wants to swap the actuator INSIDE the t-case...for $$$$$.

So I can just find a working 2001-2002 tcase and swap it in?...

You are probably right, I am a IT guy that does wrenching in his part time and not 100% sure on our trucks setup lol.

You're thinking of the differential. And there are 2 of those.

Does your 4Runner have full-time AWD? If not, I don't see why you couldn't just swap in the same style of T-case from any 3rd-gen 96-02. But if it is one with AWD then yes it will need to be from a 01 or 02.

I am not sure what full-time AWD is on these trucks, I didn't know these trucks came AWD with no 2WD at all. Usually its always rear-wheel until we engage the "4WD" button the on TC shifter. Then its in 4-hi and we can drive it on the street, etc.

Is this what you mean for AWD or did these trucks come AWD all the time with no 2WD available?

He made it clearly obvious that he has a rear actuator on the back of the case. If it's a "j" style case, Which my Runner had, WITH the push button 4WD, just put a manual "j" shift case in there.

The reason I said that, is because I'm not 100% sure on the differences between the "forward" shift cases, and the "j" shift cases, though I know there are some, besides the actual shifting. Better to swap "j" shift for "j" shift, then to try and put a manual "j" shift into a "forward" shift, and find out that there's a problem and it won't work.

Seems to me like you have the push button/push forward shifter like I do on my 1997 Limited.

I'm not 100% sure but I think some of these 4Runners came with a t-case that was always in AWD but you could go down to 4wd low. Maybe someone could chime in here.

Anyway, I think any T-case from 96-02 with the push button style will work for you.

Assuming your signature is the vehicle you're talking about you have a 2001 so YES he has the multi-mode with AWD and not the J-shift. He needs to swap it with another 2001/2002 4Runner. Can be a SR5 or Limited, they are all the same for 2001 and 2002.

Yes, it is a 2001 SR5 Sport Edition...

Any idea on how much I can snag a confirmed working TC for?

It is indeed the ADD version with the MultiMode AWD non-j style.

Is the 01-02 TC swap the same process as the J-style one?

Yes, should be the same 8 bolts that bolt it to the trans. I believe they are 12mm heads, and you will need to remove the t-case mount to get to 2 of the bolts, the mount is held in by 4 14mm bolts.
