Rear View Camera Suggestions?

Hello All,

Still waiting of some parts to come in to install the factory NAV in my runner. i neglected to choose a rear view camera for it. The Toyota one is extremely expensive, so that option is out. I've seen a company by the name of Boyo, but the customers reviews on most of them are low. Some mention Eclipse and Pioneer cameras...............I searched but couldn't find a lot on the matter of which one to choose.....

What cameras have you mounted and happy with??

Do I need to look at camera specs?
.....such as pixels (420 and up)
.....view angle of 170 degrees?

Hello All,

Being that Eclipse is no longer in the aftermarket car audio business (apparently), searching for a KNOWN camera product that works with the OEM NAVI, good luck finding one on ebay or wherever (sarcasm). I've been looking for the last 6 months. Anyway, if you search "toyota rear camera" you will get a number of chinese manufactures that make these camera for Corollas, Camrys, etc. They are cleverly designed to replace a license plate light, where the camera is, and have a smaller light to lite up the plate at night. Anyway, I found this: Ebay Now this is for a 2009+ model, I have a 2005 Limited with the E7009 radio.

Has anyone have experience with these inexpensive cameras??
Anyone try another brand with success?

There seems to be other "better looking" models out there. Some models that are made for Camrys, for instance, look very good, but I don't know if the license plate light is the same for a 05 4Runner, does anyone know???

Sorry for all the questions, if it turns out I have to replace the camera, that is fine, as long as I don't have to fiddle with the wiring, I can live with replacing the camera once in a while (only b/c I cant find anything).

I to am working on this for my wifes new 2008 4 Runner. I am going to try one that was made for a Camry unless someone else has a link to one.
 
All cameras might be "universal". I'm not 100% but I think I read something along those lines. I was in the hunt for one and settled on a Pioneer... not the cheapest but quality has been second to none IMO.

I've heard the ebay cheaper ones might not last as long. You mentioned that you don't mind changing it out. If you have to rerun the wires that might be a pain.

I've heard good things about the Boyo license plate camera. Seems to be the middle ground for price and durability. I personally prefer the "off-center" mount rather than the "centered" mount. If I have a bike rack on it could block the center mounted camera. Plus I wanted to use the cut out in the tailgate to mount my camera.

I have no regrets with my Pioneer camera. You can probably get an Amazon discount with that Pioneer device.

Here's my thread that shows the pics and the backup view. One thing I like about it and it might be true for most/all cameras... in low light conditions when I can't see anything behind me, the camera does a much better job of seeing in the dark.

I have the boyo's license plates camera's on front and back and they work great in all light levels.

The picture clarity is great also.

Can you post some pictures of where you mounted them in the front and rear?

There are many listings for an item like this. Basically, it's a plug and play camera WITH a license plate light (LED). It plugs into the license plate light so it looks completely "clean". I would say OEM, but technically on the 4Runner, OEM is when the camera is mounted apart from the light. Anyway, I thought this was a cool find b/c this means I (or others) won't have to tear into the metal/plastic tailgate to mount a camera in the "OEM position". This item would allow an easy install.

Just thought I would share...........

PS: It says "CMOS" camera and some listings say "CCD", go with the CCD (apparently it has a better quality image........ I don't know why they would even offer the other?). Also, the listing says it fits 2003-2010 4Runner which doesn't make any sense. The license plate light mount for all 4th Gen are the same. 2010 model year is complete different as it is a 5th gen.
