rear wheel issue

So I crawled under the rear of my 4runner and noticed what looked like grease inside the rear wheel and what looks like oil on the inside of the tire. What could it be (would search but I'm on my phone at a party so I'm trying to get a headstart on the repairs). Thanks in advance.

Looks like a bad axle seal. Pretty common I think.

Rear axle seals.

Lots of good threads about this. A decent DIY can manage this but usually will have to get the bearing pressed on and off at a shop.

Do this fix soon as you are slowly draining your rear differential. Do both sides.

Make sure your breather valve on top of the rear differential is not plugged. This may have caused the problem by allowing increased pressure.

Yep. Get some quotes or do it yourself.

Mine just blew as well. The Independent Toyota shop I go to in San Diego just quoted me:

$750 parts and labor
That includes both sides, actual Toyota parts, and the new brake pads for rear.

The dealership will quote you $1000-$1200.

He also told me $550 plus tax if he doesn't do the rear drum and shoes. BUT the rear brake shoes neeeed to be replaced with this fix and since he uses OEM pads it adds a bit to the cost pushing it up to about $700+, maybe just at $800 with tax.

It will be my 2nd time.

The first time was in 2006 at around 120-130k miles, performed by a Toyota dealer. The cost was about $1100.

Now I'm at 220k miles.

I'm guessing you replaced the bearings the first time for that price. I'm just one that thinks the bearings are overkill sometimes unless that is the thing causing the issue. I just replaced with oem seals for around $15 and cost of gear oil around 30k miles ago and haven't had any leaking. That is quite a ways away from 100k miles you got but I'd have to replace my seals like 18 more times before I would reach $750.

Save a ton of money and do it yourself. You should be able to do it for a couple hundred bucks if you had to pay a shop to do the bearings. You can get the bearings and seals for around $150
