Rear Wheel Stud

I need to replace a broken rear wheel stud on my 2000 4R.
Once the wheel/tire are removed, how do I proceed?

remove the drum.

hammer out the broken stud.

install the new stud.

use a big nut and the original lug nut to pull the stud through the axle flange.

re-install drum and wheel.

Should the parking brake be applied?

If clearance is tight you might need to pull the axle shaft. Pounding out the old one might be easy, keep in mind you're smacking the shaft against the oil seal, but putting a new one back in might be tough. The new stud will be longer and might not fit without pulling the shaft.

This requires removing the 4 bolts near the rear brake backing plate. Small little guys but they hold the axle in the housing. Remove the rear brake line and slide the shaft out. If you remove the backing plate you've got easy access to the back of the flange the stud is pressed into. It's also easier to use a press to remove and install the stud. If you have access to a press you minimize the chances of buggering up axle seals or the axle flange.

I usually wacked them with a rubber mallet then wiggled them loose.

How I never thought of that/realized, I don't know......

Looks good. I have never replaced studs on My 4Runner so I wasn't sure how tight the clearances were. I've had to pull the axles before but never replace a stud.

On my old 14 bolt the axle did have to be pulled and a press had to be used.

Can't seem to get it to work and a coworker has a 1999 that I broke a rear stud on yesterday...think she needs two new studs as the one that broke didn't even have the lug nut collar to the rim, was hard getting it off too....didn't look cross threaded though.
