Rear Window issues

Im pretty sure im not the only one with this issue. I bought a 94 4runner sr5 v6 auto with 145k for 1500 so im not complaining, but, the rear window, before i bought it, when they were lowering the window, jell into the tail gate and shatterd. They replaced the glass but thats it. It works every now and again but i dont want to have to replace the glass again. What is the issue and how do i fix it, Is it the motor or is it something else?

If it does work on occasion, it's probably not the motor, but could be a relay issue, or another mechanical issue.

My advice is to take it in to toyota (being cautious that they dont do ANYTHING more than you ask as it will cost you) and just get them to check it out. Usually they lube it up and try it and then if it doesnt work they will see what is screwed up. Mine was broken for over a month, I took it apart and tried everything and couldnt fix it ( even got a new relay). I brought it into toyota for them to check it out, they lubed it up and tried it and it worked first try. This was obviously a fluke because the damn thing wouldnt even move before. But yours could be due to seized gears or what not. It only takes a very small amount of resistance to overwhelm those shitty motors so any type of rust or seized hardware will stop it. Also its a good idea to avoid using the rear window when its covered in dirt and crud especially when its dry as this will create alot of friction. I only use mine (or try to) when its clean or has a bit of water on it. Also, try spraying some silicone spray around the edges of the window and the rubber trim etc. But I would suggest getting toyota to lube it up and take a looksy. Didnt cost me a dime, but thats cause it worked instantly heh. Take my advice and be very cautious of what toyota does as they will charge you for ANYTHING they do and at an unfair price at that. it will move everytime but it drops everynow and then. I dont want to have it explode in my tail gate again.

Is the glass coming out of the window track?

It doesnt seem too. It just lets go and falls.

In order for the window to just drop like that and shatter the teeth or gears must be broke inside the motor or the gears are not meshing properly on the window regulator. The motor and regulater may work fine 90% of the time but a bump or jolt may make the teeth/gears to let go and down the window will come.

Ok in order to check the window regulator I'm sure you already know that the rear acess panels must be removed. First I would check the the window regulator gear meshing. Move the window up and down. Also pull and twist the regulator a bit to see if the teeth stop meshing. If all looks good then it woiuld have to be the motor. FYI If you need a new motor don't buy off Ebay for 100 bucks go to a junk yard. Also I know the 1st gen and the 2nd gen 4runners have the same rear window motor with the exception of the connector plug. Just cut of the plug you dont need and wire on the one that came off your old motor.

I have the tail gate already apart(never put it back together the first time) So as soon as i can pry my girlfriend out of it ill check.

Does anyone know where the fuse is for the rear window on a 1990 2nd Gen? I also see from the manual there may be a "reset" button in the driver kick panel fuse box, but damn if I can find it. Anyone know.

I'm 20 hours drive from the nearest Toyota dealer in southern Baja and driving with the back window down is a bad option.

I took my 4runner to the town mechanic. He hooked up a car battery to the motor direct and it didn't move the window. He concluded the problem was with the motor. He took out a piece of scrap metal, tapped on the motor a few times and reconnected the battery. Nothing. He hit the motor a few times, a little harder than before and then reconnected the battery and the window is working again. Amazing.

That is only a quick fix. It's the same concept of when your starter goes out. One day you can hit it and get a crank out of her the next day your stuck in the middle of nowhere beating the living hell out of it praying to God for one more crank. Fix it right mickey mousing is unreliable. Plus you will not always have it apart to hit it.
