Rear window not going up, Toyota says because of dirt build up

Anyone have a 5th gen rear window issue where it won't go up due to possible dirt grime build up on the mechanism, is this a common problem? Brought it to Toyota today and they ordered a replacement part that will not arrive till Tuesday, and stated this was the issue, if I can fix it myself would like to, it is winter here now and have it in the heated garage. Although do not want to fool around to much with it being it is still under warranty. Just seems odd that this would happen, I know it is a common issue with older models where the window motor has to be replaced. You would think the seals would keep all dirt out.

Dirt in the mechanism is a horseshit cop out. Have you driven the 4Runner? These things have such drag and create such a vortex behind the truck it’s IMPOSSIBLE to keep the hatch clean.
If my service department told me that I’d probably answer with that it seems like a manufacturer defect or design flaw allowing dirt to enter the mechanism in the first place especially for a truck still under factory warranty.
I would KINDLY ask them to fix it under warranty or casually mention how you might see what Toyota corporate thinks about the situation...

I'm not sure it's by rule BS. The auto-reverse is extremely sensitive. Try it sometime, it doesn't take much more than light pressure from one finger to make the window reverse. I wouldn't rule out dirt, but if I tore into it myself and found it wasn't caked up, I'd call Toyota and have a different dealership make the repair.

They are fixing it under warranty, just wanted to know if anyone else has had something similar, being I do not agree with it either, and think it has to be a defect somehow as well. Mine is not just for show, I do get it dirty often and if there is something that may be a continuous problem I will want to know in advance to prepare for it is all. But this is probably a one off

Very possible. Winter dirt and slush splashing on the rear window. Keep rolling it up and down and it brings all that crap into the inside each time you roll it down.

Well they tried to give me a hatchback something or other for a loaner until Tuesday, got this 2018 Jeep Sahara from the rental company being Toyota didn't have anything (Toyota paid). Brand new less than 200km on it, drove it up the ski hill and it is not bad however it does not come close to a 4Runner. At least I didn't get stuck with the 1Cyl hatchback thing.

Might not come close to 4runner on comfort but i can say the 4runner will not go places the wrangler will. I had a 2013 rubi and 4runners can only gaze upon the places I went. :bounce::bounce:

When T4R shopping I drove 3 used ones (<30k miles) and they all had a hard time rolling the rear window up. One wouldn't go up at all.... so I expect issues in the future.

If ordinary dirt buildup prevents proper operation, that is either a defective part or a defective design. Let them choose. Toyota will pick "defective part."
