From the help requested on these boards that I've seen, it's usually bad grounds. Water gets in the gate from road splash or rain down the window and corrodes the grounds. The rocker switch on the console of 2nd gens collects plenty of trash, too. It doesn't always make good contact. Last, the motors 'do' wear out, but there are several threads out there on replacement with window motors from other makes / models of vehicles.

Also the teeth on the gear get stripped because it's the same motor as the ones used in the front and back doors but the tailgate motor has to raise a glass twice the weight of the other doors so the teeth get stripped.Only the wire harness plug is different,to see what other vehicles use the same motor see below:

See that's the kind of info I need, thanks Sidney. That will become very use ful in the future. Do you know if any of them are any stonger than the others?

The ones I listed are exactly the same with the exception of the wire harness plug which you can crimp the old one on.
