Rear Window

Well my rear window is acting a little weird. About two days ago i was driving and wanted to roll the window down for some air and it would not go down. Made sure the window lock was off and tried the button again and nothing. The next morning, i tried the button again and the window went down and was working fine. Then on my way home, i tried the button to see if it was working and it would not go down. I think there must be something loose in the rear hatch like i wire but im not sure. Anyone have ideas as to what could be happening? And yes i did try to search the fourms and could not find anything. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Ah yes, the classic intermitent electircal fault, usually the kind that will never occur when you take it to an auto electricans for help!
Do you have the key fob remote with the rear window down button? If so, check to see if the problem still happens when you use that to lower the window. Also, try using the key in the hatch and see what happens there. If only one of the 3 methods for lowering the window doesnt work, that will be a clue as to where the problem resides. Also, identify the fuse and relay for that system and make sure the contacts are nice and clean. Next would be to disassemble the hatch and inspect the motor stuff.

Thanks for the ideas. I tried the key in the hatch and nothing happened. unfortunately, I dont have a remote for lowering the rear window. Although i did try the window button with the engine off and the truck left on ACC to see if hear anything, and i heard a click in the back as if the window wants to go down but wont. I will look into the fuse and relay system to see if everything is connected ok. The last resort will be to open up the hatch like you said and see if anything is physically wrong. Ill keep you posted with my situation and hopefully you can help me out along the way. Thanks :bigok:

check rear defrost and wiper also

you may have an intermittent issue or the memory of the window just needs re-set.

First check to see when your window is acting up if your rear defrost and or wiper is also acting screwy. If so, I would submit that the window sometimes is confused and that triggers the other troubles.

What happened to me is the window would not go down from the inside dash switch, and the rear defrost was dead and the wiper was also dead. I looked at all my fuses and they were fine.

I went to the rear hatch and used my key to lower the window all the way down and then all the way up. This seemingly reset the memory for the window and since then it has not acted up.

I hope this works for you or then again I may have missed the point completely-it has happened before.....:biggrin2:

Well I looked at the fuses inside the truck and they seemed fine. I tried to roll the window down with the key in the back and nothing. Also the rear defroster works, but the rear wiper does not. I turned the truck on with my remote sarter,turned the rear wiper on to see what happens, tried the key in the hatch, the window didnt roll down but the wiper seemed to work. I took the key out, turned the wiper off then on again and it wouldnt turn on. The wiper seems to only work when the key is turned in the hatch. The window has completly stopped working. This is getting pretty confusing and running out of ideas to try. I will eventually open up the rear hatch and see whats goin on when the weather warms up a bit. Till then im open to any ideas you guys have out there.

check the wiring that runs in between the hatch and the body. over time, the wires will break due to hatch opening and bending them. three of mine were broken which made the window not roll down, the wiper and the dome light not work. sometimes to rear defogger would work and the plate lights would go on by themselves

I hate to say it because I can not be sure but I blame the remote starter or it's connections.

If you search around you will see a variety of electrical gremlins with one common denominator-remote starters.

How long has the remote starter been installed?

hey 96runner, i'm having exactly the same issues with my 97 runner:

rear window, wiper, defrost and cargo light have all been working only occasionally and now most have stopped working altogether.

My fuses are good and i don't have a remote starter.

I'm going to check wiring between hatch and body as suggested and then get behind the rear panel for a look.

There is a switch that senses when the window is fully closed. If that switch is flaky then the other features on the rear hatch will not work either. I will check that too.

I really havent gotten around to opening the hatch yet but i would never think my remote sarter could be afecting it. Ive had the remote starter for like a year and a half. If it was the remote sarter, Wouldnt it have afected the window right from the begining? But at this point it could be anything. And if it is, How will i know its the starter? I was also thinking about disconnecting the battery since i heard doing that will reset the ecu in the truck and hopefully fix the problem. I will also look into the wires that run into the hatch as suggested earlier. As always im open to ideas and ill keep you guys posted

hmmm I would agree if you have had the remote starter this long it likely would have acted up by now.

but that is still my top guess... I would think you would have noticed by now if the wiring loom to the back hatch were damaged.

Trouble starting, hassles with windows and doors, have all been tied back to remote starters- hope I am wrong.

Check some connections there if that is easy to do. When tied into an alarm system it seems doubly complicated.

I just read about these things.... I am a 5 speed. Take it for what it is worth....

how does that saying go? -"everything works 100% of the time until it stops working" or some such.

well the sad thing is that i finally got around to opening up my hatch. i tried the key in the hatch and i hear clicking noises from the blue box inside. all the connections seem to be fine. also checked the wires at the top of the hatch and no problem there. funny thing is that i had left the rear wiper knob on the on position, and when i started the truck up with the remote starter, trying the key in the hatch, i can turn the rear wiper on and off. this is really weired and I'm still stumped. any ideas out there on what could be going on?
