Rear windshield washer fluid?

On my 17 the rear windshield sprayer doesn't do anything when I use it, however the front still works fine leading me to believe there is still fluid in there. When fluid gets low, is it possible for the rear to not work but the front to still work?

Does the rear wiper work when you try to spray it? If not, the rear window may not be closed completely.

And yes, The washer fluid motor/pump for the rear sits higher than the one for the front on the washer fluid jar so it is possible for the front to work and not the rear.

Yes, it's possible for the front to spray and the back to not spray, if the fluid level is low.

Fluid has to be REALLY low for that to happen (I've relocated my washer fluid bottle)...maybe the pump died? VERY easy and cheap to replace, if so.

Thanks for the reply's. Yes, the rear wiper works fine and I can hear the pump working when I try to spray. I suspect that I am probably pretty low on washer fluid. Will pickup some on my way home and report back.

Is it possible that the washer fluid froze in the line? I have had the same problem with my '17 TRDORP, where I can hear the pump, but nothing is coming out. I checked the window and even opened/ closed it several times. The wiper works as does the defroster, but no juice. I refilled the reservoir to the top and still nothing. It's been holy-shit cold around here the past week or so anything is possible. Any ideas?

Exactly the same for me, just picked up and '18TRD Off Road, also darn cold here since i picked it up, front washer works, rear doesn't, wipers work. Going to bring it in actually and see what the service people have to say.

it may be frozen, but also if you ran the rear dry it actually takes a good amount of pumping for fluid to make it to the back again

Was in 15*F weather for 8 days straight. No fluid came out front or rear. I'm home in Houston now, and yesterday when it finally got above freezing the fluid came out front and rear without an issue.

I had just gotten the runner serviced, so I knew I wasn't low. It definitely froze in the lines, but thankfully didn't bust anywhere. I need to get some anti-freezing washer fluid!

I had a similar issue with my 17 TRD Pro on Dec. 24. 4Runner had sat outside overnight and it was cold. Front worked fine and rear did not. I thought I might have to take it in. Suffered through a snowy drive home and parked it in the garage.

Thought about it for a while and realized the line had probably froze. When I took it out to wash it a few days later, I tried it, knowing it had sat inside the relatively warmer garage. Worked fine, so it was definitely the cold.

It's the same reservoir and if it is very low, the front will often still work but you will get nothing from the rear. Check your fluid level.

I experienced the same symptoms - no washer fluid coming out for rear window washer; rear window wiper works fine; rear window defroster works fine; washer fluid sprays freely for front windshield.

Checked fluid level and topped up (it was not down very much) - still no fluid coming out for rear washer.

Temperature was seriously cold (close to -30 C), so my best educated guess was that something was frozen either in the line or at the nozzle. I'm betting on the nozzle, as the back end can suck up all sorts of snow during a good storm while driving.

As we reached warmer temperatures for a few days, rear washer function fully restored to normal.

BTW, I always use this Toyota windshield washer fluid with protection down to -40 C.

Had that on my 1989 FJ62. The back was a bag under an access panel you had to fill up. I guess Toyota has made some major modern upgrades on the 5th gen 4.. :biggrin2:

Yes, a REAR washer reservoir in the REAR is not broken, but many engineers like to fix things that are not broken.

Update:Frozen line been above freezing here for a few days and now it works.
